$1 Gold Liberty Type 1 BU Common Date | United States Gold Bureau (2024)

The Type 1 $1 Gold Liberty has a diameter of 13 mm and a total weight of 1.672 grams; made of 0.900 gold, the coin is composed of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper. It will therefore contain .04837 ounces of pure gold. First produced in 1849, this gold $1 coin was produced for just six years until 1854. It did not prove a popular coin due to its small dimensions; it was easily lost, leading to widespread criticism. But today, the fleeting nature and limited production makes them so collectible — so grab one while you can.

These $1 coins were struck at the Philadelphia branch of the U.S Mint, plus branch mints including New Orleans, Dahlonega, Charlotte and San Francisco. Your order is likely to be fulfilled by a coin produced in Philadelphia, from a random year of issue. You can be assured it will be in BU or "Brilliant Uncirculated" condition, retaining its original luster.

History of the $1 Gold Liberty Type 1 BU Common Date:

Imagine glancing down and seeing flakes of gold tumbling past you in the river. That's what happened at Sutter's Mill on January 24, 1848. It was a chance discovery that was to transform a region, leading to a huge growth in the population of the area, the rapid development of California and its statehood. For as word got around about the discovery, around 300,000 people traveled to the region, motivated by the hope of gold.

With the discovery of gold, came the clamoring for gold coins, as people sought a practical way to use their new-found gold. And so, in 1849 Congress approved the production of two gold coins, including a $1 piece. So purchase a $1 Gold Liberty Type 1 BU, from a random year of issue, and you'll hold a piece of the gold rush in your hand. It's an exquisite coin and a piece of history. You'll step back into the old American West when you hold this coin in your fingertips. Who knows who may have held it before you? A cowboy, a homesteader, a frontier lawman... Or maybe--just maybe--one of the legends of the Old West.

Design of the $1 Gold Liberty Type 1 BU Common Date:

This tiny $1 coin was designed by James B Longacre, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. On the obverse side, we see a left-facing profile portrait of Liberty, shown wearing a beaded coronet or crown inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Liberty's hair is partially styled in a bun at the back of her head, though many strands have escaped, falling around her neck. Liberty's portrait is surrounded by 13 stars denoting the original states of the union. The reverse design features a wreath of foliage, almost wholly encircling the value of 1 DOLLAR and the year of issue. Some variations exist as to how closed (or not) the wreath is between different years and mints of issue. The lettering UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completes the reverse design, while the edge of the coin is reeded. Don't let it slip through your fingertips - the smallest U.S coin ever produced.

Orders placed for products that are not a specific year will be fulfilled with coins of any date, based on availability. Orders of multiple coins may be filled with the same year or a variety of years.
