El interés abierto es la cantidad de contratos que permanecen sin cancelar al finalizar la rueda de operaciones, el cual aumenta si todos abren posiciones o cancelan menos de los que abren, y disminuye si todos cancelan o cancelan más que los que abren posiciones. Si un agente realizó una compra y no vendió, se dice que esa operación está abierta porque está sujeta a la variación de los precios. Lo mismo ocurre para los agentes que vendieron y no realizaron una compra idéntica. Es un importante indicador de liquidez del mercado.
