Are 1965 dimes worth anything? ›

A familiar-looking Roosevelt dime could be worth up to $30,000. But it has to be dated 1965, and it has to be made from silver. You could discover such a dime in your attic, coin jar, an old collecting book or even just in pocket change. Here's why one thin dime can be worth so much: Way back when, the U.S.

“Dime” is based on the Latin word “decimus,” meaning “one tenth.” The French used the word “disme” in the 1500s when they came up with the idea of money divided into ten parts. In America, the spelling changed from “disme” to “dime.” The designs of the early dimes showed a woman who symbolized liberty.

A very small number of 1965 quarters were accidentally minted using old silver blanks. These are quite rare, and can fetch tens of thousands of dollars or even more if in perfect condition.

The Coinage Act of 1965, Pub. L. Tooltip Public Law (United States) 89–81, 79 Stat. 254, enacted July 23, 1965, eliminated silver from the circulating United States dime (ten-cent piece) and quarter dollar coins.

The silver proofs were minted from 1950-1964, and the clad versions were minted from 1965 to present day. For the silver Roosevelt proofs, the key dates are 1950 and 1951.

The nominal weight of dimes dated 1965 and later is 2.27 gm with a tolerance of 0.091 gm. That puts the bottom normal weight at 2.18 gm, so your coin just squeaks into the acceptable range. Note that except for a few rare transitional errors, all 1965 dimes are made of cupronickel and not silver.

Even uncirculated pieces are affordable, and you should set aside a modest $1 to $1.20 for those ranked MS 60 to MS 62. Better-graded quarters are slightly more expensive, with a price range from $3 to $30, while those in MS 67 grade are estimated at $280 to $336.

Normally there will be a letter representing the mint mark. Should no letter be present, you may be in luck. Because of this error, this particular 1982 “No P” dime is considered rare and could be worth up to $2,000 (or even more).

What makes a rare dime? ›

The Seated Liberty dime series ran from 1837 to 1891, preceding the Barber dime. In 1873, they changed the weight by adding arrows next to the date on the obverse. However, a few 1873 dimes escaped without the arrows' addition. Only a few hundred 1873 No Arrows dimes exist, making them desirable rarities.

The dime has an orangish hue like a penny, and that's because it was actually minted on a copper planchet, the kind pennies are made with. It was a big mistake that the mint made, but since they put billions of coins into circulation each year, errors are bound to happen, and this one can make you some money.
