2020 Bat Quarter’s Obverse Design

There is a centrally placed image of George Washington’s head on the 2020 Bat quarter’s obverse. This image is facing the left and has the inscription “LIBERTY” under Washington’s chin.

Behind Washington’s neck and near the coin’s left rim, there’s the engraving “IN GOD WE TRUST”. Also, there are two legends along the coin’s rim; “QUARTER DOLLAR” at the bottom and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” at the top.

Beyond that, this obverse usually has a mint mark below the “IN GOD WE TRUST” engraving. This will be a “P” for coins minted in Philadelphia, a “D” for one minted in Denver, a “W” for one minted in West Point, and an “S” for those from San Francisco.

The quarters minted in West Point will also have a “V75” engraving inside an irregular oval-looking shape. This is located near the coin’s left rim a little above the “LIBERTY” engraving. This is what is known as a privy mark.

It is only present in the 2020 quarters and was placed on them to celebrate the 75th year after the end of World War II.

2020 Bat Quarter’s Reverse Design

The 2020 Bat quarter has a unique reverse design featuring two Samoan flying foxes hanging upside down; a mother and a baby. These bats like to eat fruits, giving them the popular name fruit bats.

They were chosen to be engraved in the 2020 quarter to represent the National Park of American Samoa. After all, this is the only US national park that has this bat.

They were also included in the design to draw attention to how much care this bat gives to its offspring and the dangers it faces. This isn’t the only thing that’s on the 2020 bat quarter’s reverse though; there are legends along the coin’s rim.

The top one says “NATIONAL PARK”, the bottom one has the date 2020, the right one says “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and the left one says. “AMERICAN SAMOA”.

Beyond that, the bottom left corner of the coin has the letters “RBM” while the bottom right corner has the letters “PH”. The first is the initials of the reverse’s designer, Richard Masters. The second is the initials of the engraver Phoebe Hemphill.

2020 Bat Quarter History

The 2020 Bat quarter is part of America the Beautiful series of quarters. These were minted from 2010 to 2021 and are part of the Washington quarter series that has been minted since 1932.

All the quarters produced since then have had an image of George Washington on their obverse. This image was first designed by John Flanagan.

However, some modifications were made to create the obverse design for the 2020 Bat quarter. These were made by a designer called William Cousins.

In the original 1932 quarter obverse design, the words “IN GOD WE TRUST” were located below Washington’s chin, and “LIBERTY” was along the top rim. On the other hand, the bottom rim had the date.

Unlike the 2020 Bat quarter, the original didn’t have “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “QUARTER DOLLAR” on its obverse. These were located along the reverse’s rim instead. The reverse side also had a centrally placed eagle with open wings.

This eagle was perched on a bundle of arrows placed on top of a wreath of olive branches. Also, the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” were written on top of the eagle’s head. This reverse design was also the work of John Flanagan.

However, it was changed severally over the years and currently has no resemblance to the original. As of 2023, quarters have reverse sides depicting influential American women. This quarter series began in 2022 and is called the American Women Quarters Program.

List of 2020 Bat Quarter Errors

1. 2020 Bat Quarter Struck Through

2020 Bat Quarter Value: are "P", "D", "W", "S" mint mark worth money? (6)

A strike-through errorhappens when a foreign body is between a die and a planchet at the time of striking. This leads to it getting struck on the coin. Sometimes it remains on the coin and sometimes it is removed.

When the former happens, the error is known as “strike through and retained”. Either way, some 2020 Bat quarters have this error and it can make them more valuable, even when they are ungraded.

Case in point, an ungraded 2020 Bat quarter with a strike-through error in its face was sold for $355 on eBay in 2021. On the other hand, a similar coin that was a PCGS MS63 sold for $1,399.97.

2. 2020 Bat Quarter Machine Double Die

2020 Bat Quarter Value: are "P", "D", "W", "S" mint mark worth money? (7)

As its name suggests, this error causes the doubling of design elements on a coin. This can be the result of die instability. Whatever the case, the duplication can be slight or highly noticeable.

A 2020 Bat quarter with this error on its reverse side can sell for around $20.

3. 2020 Bat Quarter Die Chip

2020 Bat Quarter Value: are "P", "D", "W", "S" mint mark worth money? (8)

Also known as a die break, this error is the result of a part of the die breaking/chipping away. So when it strikes a coin, it leaves it with a bump where the missing design is. A 2020 Bat quarter with this error can sell for around $50.

4. 2020 Bat Curved Clip

2020 Bat Quarter Value: are "P", "D", "W", "S" mint mark worth money? (9)

This error happens when the coin metal strip isn’t moved forward fast enough after blanks have been punched out. This results in an overlap between the blanking die and holes that were previously punched out.

Ultimately, this creates a coin that has some areas that have been carved out. An NGC MS61 2020 P Bat quarter with a 15% curved clip can sell for around $2,000 on eBay.

2020 Bat Quarter FAQ

Is the 2020 Bat quarter rare?

Not really, only the 2020 “W” Bat quarters can be considered a bit rare. That’s why they are more valuable than the rest. Apart from these the only rare 2020 Bat quarters are those with errors.

How do I sell a rare quarter?

To start, look for your quarter’s date, type (regular/proof), mint mark, error, and mintage. This information will let you know how rare the coin is and how much you can get for it on average.

Once you have this, you can then decide whether the coin is valuable enough to have professionally graded. If you think it is, you can send it to an agency and pay the fee before selling it. If not, just go ahead and sell it without grading.

Either way, there are several ways to sell a rare coin. For one, you can take it to a rare coin dealer; these professionals can help you get the most value for your coin. Alternatively, you can sell your coin through an auction house or site like eBay.
