Making Bread with Kids
It was about day three into my “doing a little extra plan” that I noticed a pattern…we were making bread daily!
In fact, by day six, my 7 year old was independent in putting the ingredients into the bread machine and setting it on the proper settings. I had my own homemade bread department.
And it was a very simple process.
My Favorite Recipe for Making Bread from Scratch
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 Cups MILK
- 2 Tablespoons BUTTER
- 2 teaspoons SUGAR
- 1 teaspoon SALT
- 3 Cups BREAD FLOUR
- 2 3/4 teaspoons ACTIVE DRY YEAST
how to make bread step by step
- Step 1 – Measure your ingredients.
- Step 2 – Mix ingredients together or mix together the yeast and liquid first, allowing it to rise double in size, and then mixing everything together.
- Step 3 – Let the dough rise.
- Step 4 – Knead the dough.
- Step 5 – Shape the dough.
- Step 6 – Final rising of the dough also called proofing.
- Step 7 – Baking the bread.
- Step 8 – Let bread cool.
- Step 9 – Slice and eat!
how to make bread in a bread machine
If you want to use a bread machine on automatic settings, select white bread and dump all the ingredients into the bread machine and walk away. If you prefer the loaves of bread that come out of a traditional loaf pan, then try this:
- Add both the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients to the bread machine bowl.
- Set for manual setting so it takes it through the mixing with a dough hook, first dough rise, mixing, second rise process on its own in a warm place.
- When the manual setting is over, I let it rise in place until it doubles in size and then turn it out on a cutting board work surface covered with all purpose flour to knead the dough slightly and smooth into loaves.
- Bake in a regular bread pan in a preheated oven at 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes until you have delightfully crusty bread.
- Set on a cooling rack until someone eats it all or it cools & store in airtight container if anything is left.
Favorite bread recipe variations
A combination of whole wheat flour and bread flour can be tried for a different density of bread. I really like this recipe because once sliced it makes my favorite sandwiches!
We also like to use the delicious white bread dough to make cinnamon rolls, pizza runzas and cheeseburger runzas.

Bread Making FAQ
What are the 4 main ingredients in bread?
Bread requires 4 basic ingredients: flour, water, yeast and salt
What makes bread light and fluffy?
I have found that when I use bread flour, it results in a light and fluffy loaf. This may be because bread flour has more gluten which will keep the bread moisture intact and allow more of the gas from the yeast be captured inside the bread.
Do you need to put water in oven when baking bread?
I have never tried this, but the theory is that adding a shallow pan of water will add steam to the baking process.
What are the Secrets to Making Good Bread?
I think the best way to make an amazing loaf is to find a bread recipe you love and make it over and over. It is really surprising that you will learn something every single time you make the bread recipe, even if it is a simple recipe!
