A participant in our recent Q&A (Ask the Career Coach) session asked for some help with the following:

We’re looking for resources on being more accurate and working not to miss details.

This is such an important topic of discussion! I appreciated the question because it really made me think about my own processes and what I would recommend for those looking to improve their accuracy and attention to detail. In essence, I came up with three different steps. Here’s a brief overview:

1. Know the process for achieving an accurate outcome.

This means, we need to know what accuracy actually looks like in any given situation and the steps that we go through to achieve it.

So, for example, if you’re proofreading a document, you first need to know the basics of grammar, spelling, and other fundamentals of the language in order to do it correctly.

It’s worthwhile noting that, when we’re working on a new type of task or developing our expertise with something, we may be guessing at first. We may have to figure the process out as we go. In that case, it’s probable to assume that the outcome (at first) will not be accurate. It’s only once we actually develop our understanding of the required steps that accuracy is even possible.

2. Implement the process slowly and with an engaged mind.

We MUST slow down and tune into what we’re doing to catch details. Operating on autopilot won’t work! We can’t be multitasking or surrounded by distractions. These things just increase the probability of errors.

3. Have a system in place to double-check your work.

Lastly, you need someone or something that helps to make sure you’ve implemented the correct process and achieved the accurate outcomes.

This could be as simple as walking away from your completed work for 10 minutes, and then reviewing it again with fresh eyes before you finalize it.
