If you’re a young professional like me, then chances are pretty high that one of the first business book recommendations made to you was (or will be) Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits. The first time I read it I was 18, and I didn’t get it. “What the hell was that about?” I thought, throwing it back onto the pile of books I’d bought intended to help me become master of the universe. I had no real business or life experience to use as a reference point. So I put it down, and went on my way.
I picked it up again a few years later and found myself highlighting a couple of paragraphs this time around. “That’s interesting, I must have missed these pages,” I thought in surprise. Then the next year, I came back again, and highlighted a few more. “I must really not have read this book properly at all,” I would think to myself each time. But, in reality, deep down I knew that I was only starting to understand, to make connections to personal events, the book’s wisdom finally starting to penetrate my bubble. There’s an old quote by John Keats, “Nothing ever becomes real till it is experienced — even a proverb is no proverb to you till your life has illustrated it.”
Because of Covey’s immense popularity in business, and especially among management consultants, I have found that some people look at his ideas as clichéd, outdated or overused. However, I don’t think the very popularity of a thing should diminish its truth-value; don't avoid it simply for fear of conforming to the mainstream. There is a reason why The 7 Habits is the highest-selling leadership / self-help book ever written, and why I keep coming back. There is deep, timeless wisdom.
