A little slice of the beach, right in your own backyard. Sandboxes can provide hours of fun for kids of all ages, allowing them to get messy, build sand structures, and let their imaginations soar.

Now as an adult, though, you know that sandboxes aren’t all fun and games (at least not for you) — your children’s sandbox needs to be maintained so that their play area stays safe and sanitary. Since sandbox maintenance is so important, we’ve put together a list of key sandbox care tips to help you keep your kids’ play area safe and clean.

At Adventure World Play Sets, we’re dedicated to all things outdoor fun, which is why we not only build amazing playsets and swing sets, but we also include sandboxes with many of those exciting sets. Keep your kids’ beloved sandbox clean and safe for use by following these 4 simple guidelines:

Sandbox Care Tips that Only Take a Few Minutes

You want your kids to enjoy their sandbox, but you also want to make sure they’re safe while doing so. Check out these 4 easy sandbox maintenance tips so that you never have to worry about the cleanliness of the sand your kids are playing in:

  1. Rake the Sandbox It’s unpleasant to think about, but sand may not be the only thing inside your kids’ sandbox. Wild animals — and even household pets — sometimes mistake sandboxes as their impromptu litter boxes. Plus, sharp rocks or sticks can hide under the sand, which can result in scrapes and cuts. Proper sandbox care requires you to rake the sandbox every so often — doing so will allow you to unearth and remove anything that shouldn’t be there.
  2. Cover up the Sandbox Sandbox maintenance becomes a lot easier when you don’t have to do it as often. Covering up the sandbox when it’s not in use makes it harder for animals, rocks, and other debris to infiltrate it — making sandbox care a breeze. Another reason to keep your sandbox covered is to prevent water from getting in. Excess water can actually cause mold to grow on the sand. At Adventure World Play Sets, we offer a matching lid, crafted to the size of your sandbox, which makes this tip even easier for you. However, if you don’t own one of our sandboxes and you need something to cover yours up, you can oftentimes buy a lid at a big box store. In a pinch, a tarp will also work to keep the sandbox covered.

See our ideas for a backyard play area.

  3. Change the Sand You may be pretty diligent with your sandbox maintenance, but eventually the sand will become too dirty to allow for safe and sanitary play. Changing the sand keeps your kids’ play area clean and usable for years to come, and they’ll appreciate having fresh sand to play in and build with. Change the sand in your children’s sandbox at least twice per year.
  4. Watch for Splinters If you purchased a wooden sandbox for your kids, splinters are an unfortunate possibility. Just like wooden playsets can cause splinters, wooden sandboxes can too. All of the sandboxes that come with Adventure World Play Sets’ swing sets and playsets are built with a wood frame encased in top-quality vinyl — and since vinyl doesn’t splinter like wood, you won’t ever have to worry about it.

If you’re looking for a playset that combines the thrills of swinging, sliding and more with a full-size sandbox you’re in the right place. Most of our popular models come standard with sandboxes that sit right under the main swing set tower to provide shade while your kids play. Plus, our sandboxes come with four seats, one in each corner, which means there’s enough room for everybody. Finally, since ALL of our playsets are completely custom, you can add a sandbox and any other popular swing set accessories you like on any model.

We have been trying to purchase one of these play sets for months and none of the dealers in our area will call us back about purchasing one. I wish the purchasing process was easier than "find a vendor in your local area". No one here wants to build them! The Happy Hideout looks like an amazing product for my toddler to grow into. I'm sad no one will build them or call us back. Edit: The company contacted me personally and found a vendor in my area!
