Last week we were invited to host the Behance portfolio review at Arts University in Bournemouth (AUB). The event involved critiquing student's Behance portfolio, websites and selecting winning portfolios.

Team Yes along with many awesome creatives from the industry provided feedback and advice on creating a killer portfolio that stands out and prepare students for life after university! Here is a snippet of the event!

A massive thanks to all students that attended! Here are list of students with an outstanding portfolio! Keep up the good work!

Useful tips on creating a portfolio that stands out!

1. Less is more

  • Be thoughtful about what you include
  • 3C rule: curated, clear, concise
  • Select only your strongest pieces
  • Showcase your most unique and creative work
  • If you work is varied, include a representative project from each category
  • Don’t be afraid of showcasing personal projects as long as they are relevant

2. Variety & Unity

  • Keep your portfolio interesting with varied examples of work
  • Make sure it still looks like one person’s work
  • Tie everything together with the thumbnail/cover images
  • Be consistent in the way you present each project
  • Avoid boring screenshots, use mockupsand flat lays
  • Include close-ups of interesting details

3. Stay Current

  • Don’t include work that is older than 5 years
  • Avoid looking dated
  • Do a spring cleaning each year
  • Set reminders to add new projects to your portfolio
  • Sometimes it is enough to update the imagery and visuals of an older project to make it look more fresh

4. Tell a story

  • Showcase the design process, not just the final result
  • Mention the results of each project
  • Include work-in-progress imagery like sketches, notes (thought process)
  • Start and finish with your best projects
  • Pay extra attention to the copy- don’t leave any typos
  • Credit your collaborators

5. Tailor it

  • Customise your portfolio and CV for each job application
  • Prepare to talk about your projects in relation to the job you are applying for
  • Sell your work - be passionate, personable and honest
  • Physical work is always a plus, always take some to interviews
