5 Top Mushroom Growing Supplies You Need for Your Mushroom Farm (1)

Mushroom growing supplies for cultivating gourmet mushrooms includes spawn, filter patch bags, substrate, steamer, and a flow hood. Learn about each now.

1) Spawn. One of the most important mushroom growing supplies for growing high-quality, high-yielding mushrooms is spawn. Spawn should be sourced from a commercial operation and be contaminant free. If there are any forms of contamination in the spawn they will be expanded when a new substrate is inoculated. Even a small amount of contamination in the spawn source can result in all the inoculated bags becoming contaminated. There are commonly two different spawn types used: sawdust and grain.

Grain has several benefits including its typically higher nutrient content than sawdust and lower generation. Sawdust has smaller inoculated points so it can be more evenly distributed in the inoculated medium. If inoculating more sawdust the mycelium is already creating the necessary enzymes to digest the sawdust which will lead to faster colonization.

2) Filter patch bags. One of the important mushroom growing supplies is filter patch bags. These ensure contaminants are kept out of the sterilized substrate. Without filter patch bags it is difficult to use high-nutrient medium and to get high yields from exotic mushrooms like shiitake, oyster, and lion's mane. Filter patch bags can withstand autoclaving and atmospheric steaming to ensure the highest level of sterility.

3) Substrate. Substrate is the material that the mushrooms are grown on. Substrate provides a critical role in determining what nutrients the mycelium has access to. Having a proven substrate formula with the correct nutrients and water content is vital to growing gourmet mushrooms. The three critical mushroom growing supplies pertaining to substrate are sawdust, soybean hulls, and wheat bran. Sawdust can be in the form of raw dust from sawmills or hot water fuel pellets commonly referred to as HWFP. A mixture of 50/50 sawdust and soybean hulls is a great formula for most exotic mushrooms including oyster, lion's mane, pioppino, and chestnut. Sawdust, wheat bran and gypsum used at a ratio of 79,20,1% is a great formula for shiitake. These mushroom growing supplies can commonly be sourced from local feed or farmer supply stores.

4) Steamer.Proper sterilization is one of the most important aspects of mushroom cultivation. Although a steamer may fall more into the equipment section rather than growing supplies category, it is vital for any mushroom farm. The cheapest, most-accessible method of steaming is atmospheric steam. Using 3-9 KW steam generators, substrate can be heated up to about 210 degrees and maintained for 16 hours. This effectively sterilizes the substrate, preparing it for the desired mushroom mycelium.

5) Flow hood. A high-quality working laminar flow hood is vital to make high-yielding mushroom blocks. A flow hood is simply a fan with a filter on it. It cleans the air from any unwanted bacteria, fungi, or viruses that may want to grow on the substrate. It is important to inoculate treated substrate in this clean air flow. This ensures the substrate only has the desired mushroom growing in it. The growing supplies needed to create a flow hood will be discussed in a future blog post.

Additional resources associated with mushroom growing supplies

There may be additional supplies you’ll need for growing gourmet mushrooms, depending on how you plan on doing it. For instance, if you’ve determined that there is a great local market hungry for gourmet mushrooms that you plan to grow, but you do not have the time, space, or staff to create all of the spawn and substrate bags yourself, then having ready-to-fruit blocks or bags is the perfect way to start. If you are a mushroom farmer that falls into this category, then you can order ready-to-fruit blocks directly from us. This way you can focus on producing and selling the mushrooms and not add creating the blocks as part of your task. The mushroom blocks we sell are 10 lb blocks, certified organic, and typically fruit 3-5 lbs of fresh mushrooms. We offer an array of mushroom species in this form, including:

  • Blue oyster mushroom
  • Golden oyster mushroom
  • Pink oyster mushroom
  • King oyster mushroom
  • White oyster mushroom
  • Black oyster mushroom
  • Lion's mane mushroom
  • Shiitake mushroom
  • Pioppino mushroom
  • Reishi mushroom

Take a look at all of your options here. We can offer wholesale rates if you are interested in a minimum purchase of 20 blocks of the same mushroom species. Here is a breakdown of our whole rates: 20-50 kits: $20 per kit 51-100 kits: $17 per kit 101-150 kits: $15 per kit 150+ kits: $12 per kit Bulk orders require notice and prep. Contact our sales team directly to discuss and place your order: 978-844-1811.

These blocks are ready to fruit when you receive them so you can initiate fruiting as soon as you receive them. If you plan on storing them, keep in mind that they can last for about 3-4 weeks in a cooler before they start fruiting in the bag and yield is decreased. These blocks fruit in flushes. You should be able to get between three and five pounds of fresh mushrooms throughout the duration of the kit's life.

What is needed for mushroom growing? ›

In the wild, mushrooms grow on both soil and other substrates like wood, but no soil is necessary for growing them at home. Instead, they'll grow on substances like sawdust, grain, straw, or wood chips for nourishment. A blend of the spores and these nutrient sources is called spawn.

What are the collection of required materials for mushroom cultivation? ›

The substrate on which button mushroom grows is mainly prepared from a mixture of plant wastes (cereal straw/ sugarcane bagasse etc.), salts (urea, superphosphate / gypsum etc), supplements (rice bran/ wheat bran) and water.

What is a mushroom basic need? ›

For mushrooms, the hardest parts are figuring out the right substrate from which they will grow, as well as providing consistent conditions. They require an even, warm, temperature as well as quite a bit of moisture once they have spawned (once the spores are on a substrate).

What kind of equipment do you need to go mushroom? ›

Tools like spray bottles, growth chambers, and humidity and temperature monitors become crucial here. While natural light can often suffice for fruiting, specialized grow lights can offer more controlled light exposure.

Do mushroom farms need light? ›

Unlike plants that rely heavily on direct sunlight for photosynthesis, mushrooms do not require direct sunlight. In fact, excessive exposure to direct sunlight or full sun can be detrimental to their development. The ideal lighting condition for mushrooms is often described as mimicking natural daylight.

What is the easiest mushroom to grow? ›

Pretty much every mushroom growing resource I could find says that oyster mushrooms are the easiest variety for first time-growers, as they grow fast and can easily thrive in substrates made of things like coffee grounds and straw, making them relatively low maintenance.

What tools are used in mushroom cultivation? ›

Mushroom Growing Tools: Drill Bits, Adapters, Inoculators.

What are the chemicals required for mushroom cultivation? ›

Mercuric chloride and sodium hypochlorite are used at 0.1 % concentration. Usually potassium permanganate and formalin are mixed at 1:2 ratio for fumigating culture rooms or mushroom sheds. After mixing the rooms should be closed tightly to avoid escape of fumes from the room and open after 24 hr.

What materials do mycelium grow on? ›

In order to form the structures of the composites, mycelium needs a substrate to grow into. To fabricate these mycelium based composites outside of natural processes, options for substrates include common “left-over” materials such as wood and straw.

What does fungi need to thrive? ›

Field studies on plant pathogens have demonstrated that the growth of fungi is favored by high moisture and moderate temperatures [3,15-18] and that low relative humidity and extreme temperatures inhibit growth and spore germination [13,19].

What does mycelium need to survive? ›

In solid-state fermentation, mycelium is grown on forestry bioproducts, like sawdust, in an environment with high carbon dioxide concentrations and controlled humidity and temperature.

What does it take to be a mushroom farmer? ›

Your mushroom growing business will need a mixing and inoculation space, an incubation room and a fruiting room. A mixing and inoculation space is any clean area where you can mix mushroom spawn with substrate and place it into bags. The conditions in this room just need to be comfortable for you to work in.

What equipment do mycologists use? ›

Bioreactors. Vessels known as Bioreactors are used to create the optimal conditions for cell cultivation & microbial fermentation. In mycology these bioreactors are ideal for liquid cultures and many other advanced processes.

Are mushroom farms profitable? ›

Mushroom farming has many benefits over traditional agriculture; it's environmentally friendly, sustainable, efficient with space usage, low labor costs (when done right), and can be profitable if well planned out for small-scale operations.
