7 Things Laying Around the House Worth Money - Single Moms Income (1)How much stuff are you storing in your home and how much is it worth? My husband and I are in the process of buying a home and realize we don’t want to take a lot of stuff with us.

I’ve been doing a good job with decluttering this past year but we are starting to realize how expensive financing a home can get (*cough* closing costs). As a result, I think it doesn’t hurt to start selling some of our unwanted or unused items laying around the house to make some extra quick cash.

It makes no sense to pack some items up and take them to the new house just to continue to sit and collect dust.

We don’t have enough to host a big garage sale, but I do want to experiment with selling some items online or to resale shops.

Whether you’re thinking about moving or not, I’m sure we’re not the only ones with profitable items laying around the house. Here are 7 things in your home that could be worth quite a bit of money.

1. Furniture

Furniture is usually a great seller if it’s in good condition. Most people just want to get rid of their furniture ASAP and toss it out on the curb but it could be worth a lot of money.

I’ve had my furniture since college, so I’m sure it’s not worth much, but one of my couches I got from Ashley Furniture is still in great condition and could be cleaned easily and sold for a few hundred dollars.

If you have old tables, dressers, end tables, etc. it doesn’t hurt to create a listing on Craigslist or Facebook and see who’s interested.

2. Purses

If you have quite a few purses that you don’t use anymore consider selling them for a profit. Usually, you can make the most money with designer purses or purses that are in great condition.

I’ve never been a huge designer person myself because I never wanted to spend that much on purses. However, I have managed to snag a few designer bags from thrift stores over the years.

I know that I can resell them for practically double or triple what I paid which is a good deal.

3. Graphic Calculators

I owned a couple graphic calculators during high school and college. They were only ever used for math classes and so they spent the majority of their time sitting in a desk drawer afterward.

Now that I’ve been done with school for several years, I don’t think I’ll ever need them again. The cool thing about graphic calculators is that even if they are older models, they can still sell well because they can be pricey new.

4. Textbooks

Speaking of school, you may have old textbooks lying around the house as well. For some reason, I held on to certain textbooks and even my folders from some of my journalism college classes.

My thought was that I would one day need them or look back on some of the material I learned to help with my journalism career. It’s been a few years and that has yet to happen. In fact, the other day I noticed the stack of books and folders when cleaning up and they had dust on them.

I definitely don’t want to lug that stuff to my new house so I will try selling it online to get rid of it.

Also, if you have other books that you’ve read already or no longer need, consider the fact that they may sell well if you decide to rid yourself of the clutter.

5. Clothes and Shoes

When you have old clothes and shoes, your first thought may be to throw everything into a bag and drop it off at the nearest Goodwill or Salvation Army bin.

If you don’t have anyone to donate the items to, you could also try selling them. There are tons of stores and sites dedicated specifically to buying other people’s clothing and shoes. If you have in-season items that are in good condition, you could try selling to stores like Plato’s Closet and Clothes Mentor or send your clothing to ThredUp.com.

Amazon, eBay, and Poshmark are other great places to sell your clothes and shoes online.

6. Electronics and Appliances

Electronics often sell great. If you have old laptops, cell phones, gaming consoles, DVD players or even movies that still work well, you can sell them and make a reasonable profit.

I like using sites like Decluttr to sell electronics along with eBay. You can also consider local stores like Game Stop who may buy some of your newer model electronics.

Even if your items don’t work, you can still sell them. My husband and I have several old Android phones and even two laptops that no longer work but we plan to try to get a quote for them using sites like Next Worth.

When it comes to appliances, you don’t have to sell big things like your washer and dryer or lawn mower if they are still of use to you.

Think about getting rid of smaller items like a microwave, toaster, or even a crock pot. You can still make good money on these items if you are no longer using them.

7. Coffee Mugs

Yes, I know it sounds weird but people will buy your coffee mugs. Mugs make great gifts and it’s something avid coffee and tea drinkers will use and cherish daily.

If you have branded items like Pampered Chef Mugs, for example, you can sell those for quite a bit. I’d recommend selling the mugs at a yard sale and avoiding shipping them off yourself since they may be delicate.

Selling items from your home is one of the best ways to earn some quick cash and free up space in your home. It’s crazy to think about how much potential money is just lying around the house which is why I’d recommend you take a look around and create a list of items you can sell.

Start listing them online and in local Facebook groups and see how much you can make!

What items do you have lying around your house that you could sell?
