The instructions for word searches couldn’t be simpler—it’s in the name. Search the grid to find the words. While the concept may be easy, sometimes these alphabet stews can be quite a challenge. When your word search goes off the rails, these word search tips may help you get over the hump.
Scan the Grid First
One of the best ways to solve a word search like Universal Word Search fast is to scan the grid and try to spot something. Keep in mind you don’t necessarily need to know the word list to do this. Just scan the rows, reversing directions on each row to see what words jump out at you.
Look for Lesser-Used Letters
To find words in a word search quickly, look for lesser-used letters. According to The University of Notre Dame, B, V, K, Q, J, X, and Z are the most uncommon letters in the English language. As a result of their rarity, your eyes may spot words with those letters faster than some of the usual suspects (looking at you, E, T, A, I, N, O, and S).
Spot Words That Have Double Letters
Double letters can be eye-catching. So, if you’re looking for LATTE in a level of WonderWord, for example, try scanning the grid for pairs of Ts.
Check for Interesting Letter Pairs
Like double letters, interesting letter pairs can also stand out. If you’re looking for QUEST, scan for QU pairings.
Use a Pen or Finger To Guide You
To solve word searches fast, grab a pen or bookmark to keep things in line. These tools can come in particularly handy on diagonals. If you’re solving a word search online, just make sure your helpers won’t scratch the screen.
Pay Attention To Empty Spaces
As you continue making your way down your word list, you’ll probably notice empty spaces on your grid. These spaces are not part of the design, so focus your sleuthing on those areas; there’s a very good chance you’ll find some words hiding out there.
Shift Your Focus
When trying to find words in a word search quickly, you can always apply some life skills. We’ll explain. Ever notice that when you’re trying to remember something (a name, or a word, for example), it just can’t seem to make an appearance no matter how hard you try? And later that same day, it just pops into your head when you’re casually picking lint off your sweater and not even thinking about it. Word searches work in much the same way; sometimes, it’s easier to find words when you’re not hyper-focused on them.
Take a Break!
In the same vein as shifting your focus, don’t be afraid to take a break from your word search when your progress has stalled. Taking frequent breaks and coming back to the puzzle with fresh eyes is an excellent way to solve a word search fast.
