A BRIEF HISTORY OF CADILLAC’S V8 ENGINES | Sunset Cadillac of Sarasota (2024)

May 18, 2020

Since the start of the 20th century, Cadillac has been one of the most innovative automotive manufacturers. Many of their earliest innovations, such as the electric starter and driver control layout system, have become the standard for all modern automobiles.

This innovation has continued throughout Cadillac's history and allowed them to offer some of the most technologically advanced automobiles that combine exceptional performance, reliability, and luxury.

Cadillac's V8 engine is no exception to this rule. Cadillac developed the first V8 engine for consumers in 1914 and has continued developing exceptional engines for over 100 years.

Origins of the V8

No one is certain who first developed the modern V8 engine. What we know is that in 1902, Leon Levavasseur took out a patent on the V8 engine.

Initially, the V8 wasn't meant for cars, but for other types of motor vehicles. Thefirst V8 engineswere installed on boats and airplanes. These V8 engines were used to provide faster and better performing boats and airplanes. In its first years, these engines would power airplanes and boats that set speed and altitude records.

Eventually, car enthusiasts started thinking about using V8s in automobiles. Several individuals began adding V8s to race cars. They were also used in cars specifically designed to break speed records.

However, most of these V8 engines were not developed for consumers but for race car performance. A couple of manufacturers built V8 cars meant for consumers, but only a few were built at a time and never made a huge impact on the consumer automobile industry.

By 1914, while the V8 engine was being used in many places, they weren't available to the majority of consumers.

Cadillac Starts Developing Some of the Most Innovative Vehicles of the Early 20th Century

Cadillac would dramatically change how the V8 was used in automobiles. Instead of using the V8 on race cars or limited production runs of consumer automobiles, they installed them in mass production cars.

From the first car they built in 1902, Cadillac led the way in automobile innovation. Henry Leland, Cadillac's first General Manager, insisted onbuilding a high-quality car. These first Cadillacs, like those built today, combined excellent performance with superior craftsmanship.

Initially, Cadillac was created to offer high-powered cars to consumers. When he worked for Oldsmobile, Leland developeda one-cylinder engine. The engine was sopowerful that Oldsmobile had no use for it in their vehicles. Instead, Leland and other partners founded Cadillac to produce vehicles that could handle these high-performance engines. The one-cylinder engine was offered to consumers in 1902. By 1905, Cadillac had added a more powerful four-cylinder model.

However, Cadillac wasn't just developing powerful engines, but also creating other major innovations for automobiles. These inventions helped make it possible for their powerful engines to work. They also helped make cars safer and more comfortable for drivers and passengers.

For example, in 1910, Cadillac released the first car with afully enclosed cabin. They also developed the electric starter in 1912, which got rid of the dangerous hand crank that was used to start cars before then. Cadillac also developed the layout of the car's control system that is the basis for how all modern cars are designed. These three innovations would become cornerstones of automobile design throughout the 20th century.

Cadillac would be recognized for its innovation throughout its history. In 1958, when Popular Mechanics named the major milestones in the evaluation of the car, Cadillac was the only manufacturer to have four major achievements (replaceable spare parts in 1908, the electric self-starter in 1912, the 1914 V8, and the synchromesh transmission in 1929).

Cadillac Introduces the First V8 Engine for the Public

This innovation would soon be used to create the first mass-produced V8 engine. In September 1914, Cadillac introduced the first V8 engine in a mass-produced automobile. The engine was a 5.1-liter, 70-horsepower engine that was known for its smoothness and performance. Within the first year, Cadillac sold over 13,000 cars with V8 engines.

The demand for vehicles with these engines continued to grow. During World War I, the United States War Departmentpurchased over 2,000 Cadillacswith V8 engines and sent them to France for use by the army. Other nations, like Britain, France, and Canada, alsoordered Cadillac V8sfor their militaries.

After the war, demand continued to grow. By 1927, Cadillac was building around 48,000 V8 model vehicles a year.

Progress of the V8

Cadillac continued to develop better engines throughout the 20th century. In 1930, they developed V-12 and V-16 engines. However, they also kept refining and improving the V8. In 1949, Cadillac released a new 160 horsepower V8 engine with brand new engine technology.

Three years later, Cadillac had refined this engine to produce 190 horsepower. These innovations continued and by 1970, Cadillac's V8 engine produced 400 horsepower, and was one of the most powerful engines of its time.

These innovations have been added throughout Cadillac's engines. While many of their vehicles, like theEscalade, use different size engines, they all share the quality, performance, and innovation that has been present throughout the company's history.

Most recently, the Cadillac's Blackwing V8 has been installed inCadillac's CT6-V. With 500 horsepower, this V8 engine has received positive reviews from auto reviewers likeMotortrend.
