About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (2024)

Important: If you have backup turned on, your edits will sync to your Google Photos account. To use some features, you must have backup turned on. .

Edit your photos and videos

Use Magic Editor

Important:

  • Your device must have a 64-bit chipset with at least 4 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.
  • This feature is experimental and may not always work how you expect.

You can move around, resize, erase, or reimagine parts of your photos and apply contextual or special effect presets, like “Auto Frame,” “Sky,” or “Golden hour.”

Edit a photo with Magic Editor

  1. On your Pixel device, open the Google Photos app About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (1) .
  2. Tap on the photo that you want to edit.
  3. Tap Edit About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (2) About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (3) Magic Editor About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (4).

Apply contextual presets to your entire photo

  1. When you’re in Magic Editor mode, tap Preset About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (5).
  2. Select a preset.
  3. To scroll through your options, swipe left.
  4. Tap the Checkmark About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (6).
  5. If you want to continue to edit your photo, repeat steps 1-3.
  6. When you’re finished with your edit, tap Save copy.

Tip: Preset options depend on your photo. Not all options are available at the same time.

Use Auto Frame to recompose your photo

Important: To use this feature, you must be at least 18 and on Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.

If a photo is too cropped in or not properly framed, use the Auto frame preset to recompose or extend the background of your photo.

Use Portrait to spotlight your subjects

To automatically remove distractions, blur your background, and add portrait lighting, use the Portrait preset.

Select part of your photo

  1. When you’re in Magic Editor mode, tap, draw a circle around, or brush to select a part of your photo.
  2. Zoom in for better accuracy.
  3. To add or subtract objects from your current selection, tap Refine selection.
    • To select more objects, keep Add selected.
    • To select less objects, tap Subtract.

Use Magic Editor to edit a part of your photo

Important:

  • It may take a moment for Magic Editor to generate photo options.
  • To view the original version compared to your edited photo, tap and hold the screen.

After you select a part of your photo, you can move, resize, erase, or reimagine your selection.

Move a part of your photo

To move your selection, touch and hold, then drag it to the area you want.

Resize a part of your photo

To change the size of your selection, touch and hold, and pinch it with 2 fingers.

Erase a part of your photo

To remove your selection, tap Erase.

Reimagine a part of your photo

Important:

  • To use Reimagine, you must use English prompts.
  • To use this feature, you must be at least 18 and on Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel Fold, or Pixel Tablet.

You can change the appearance, material, or texture of your selection.

  1. At the bottom, tap Reimagine.
  2. In the corresponding text field, enter a prompt to change the content or the elements of your selection.
    • For next results, be specific and descriptive. For example, start with a simple phrase like, “field of yellow flowers,” or “fall leaves.”
  3. Swipe to check other options. When you find the one you like, tap the Checkmark About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (7).

Tips:

  • Use only nouns and adjectives for better results.
  • To change the background, select the background and make sure that the subjects aren’t included.
  • For edits like brightening and contrast, use the regular editor.
  • To erase, use Erase instead of Reimagine.

Edit your photos & videos in Google Photos

Best Take

Important: This feature is available on Pixel 8 and later.

If someone blinks or looks away in your group photos, Best Take combines similar photos into one photo where everyone looks their best. You can choose your favorite facial expressions for everyone and create your own Best Take.

To edit a photo with Best Take:

  1. Open the Google Photos app About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (8).
  2. Open a photo from a sequence of similar photos that includes one or more people.
  3. At the bottom, tap Edit About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (9) About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (10) Tools About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (11) Best Take.
  4. Tap on a face bubble to choose a different expression.
  5. When you’re satisfied, tap Done.

Audio Magic Eraser

Important: This feature is available on Pixel 8 and later.

To reduce unwanted sounds or to turn up sounds from videos, you can use Audio Magic Eraser on your Pixel phone.

  1. On your Pixel phone, open the Google Photos app About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (12).
  2. Tap on the video you want to edit.
  3. At the bottom, tap Edit About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (13) Audio About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (14) Audio eraser.
    • To have your phone automatically adjust the audio for you, tap Auto.
    • To manually adjust sounds, tap on a sound and adjust the slider.
    • To adjust the volume of different speakers, adjust the slider for each speaker.
  4. At the bottom right, tap Save copy.

Tips:

  • Before you save a video, you can test what it sounds like. On the video thumbnail, tap Play About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (15).
  • Sound options depend on your video. Not all options are available at the same time.

Zoom Enhance

Important:

  • This feature is available for Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
  • This feature is not available for images with resolution higher than 12.5MP.

Zoom in on an existing photo to make the image more crisp and detailed. You can save the enhanced image as a high-resolution file.

  1. On your Pixel device, open the Photos app About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (16).
  2. Tap on the photo that you want to edit.
  3. Tap Edit About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (17) Tools About Google Photos features for Pixel devices (18) Zoom Enhance.
  4. Zoom in on a certain part of the photo that you’d like enhanced. For best results, zoom in closer to your subject.
  5. Tap Crop and enhance.
    • For images from Pixel 8 Pro and 9 Pro that were highly zoomed, to apply the effect without cropping your photo first, tap Enhance details.
  6. To keep the enhanced photo, tap Save copy.

Tip: To compare the enhanced and original images, tap and hold the photo.

View your edited photos & videos in Google Photos

Add me

You can now be part of any group photo. Take the group photo, swap with someone to capture another photo, and join the group. The camera stitches together the two versions with the Add Me feature. Learn how to use Add me.

When you view photos created with Add me in the Google Photos app, they appear as a photo stack. In the photo stack, you can find the two original photos and the stitched photo. Learn more about photo stacks.

Video Boost

Important: This feature is only available on Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro.

You can capture videos on your Pixel camera with better lighting, colors, and details. Video Boost also enables Night Sight Video.To use Video Boost, the video must be backed up in Google Photos. Learn more about backup.
