Checklist to add a form of payment

Get started

  • Make sure that your bank works with UPI. If it doesn’t, your bank account won’t work with Google Pay.
  • Make sure that you have outgoing SMS services turned on. Some prepaid recharge packs don't have outgoing SMS enabled, so you may need to get in touch with your operator.

    To check your balance with different operators:

    • Jio - 333#
    • BSNL - *123*1#
    • Airtel - *121*7#
    • MTNL - *123#
    • Tata - *111#
    • VI - *199*1*8#
      Tip: To test if this works, send an outgoing SMS to a friend or family member.
  • Make sure that you have a debit card for the bank account that you want to add. Alternatively, you can also use your Aadhaar to add your bank account to Google Pay.
    Important: Make sure your Aadhaar is linked to the same mobile number registered with the bank account you want to add.
  • Make sure to use the same mobile number that you’ve registered with your bank account.

Know more about RuPay cards

  • To make UPI transactions, you can add your RuPay credit card. All prerequisites for the bank accounts listed above also apply to RuPay cards. If you want to add a RuPay credit account, keep your RuPay credit card handy. Alternatively, you can also use your Aadhaar to add your RuPay credit card to Google Pay.
  • For now, there’s a limited number of banks that issue RuPay credit cards. To learn more, contact your bank.
  • Payments made with RuPay credit cards are enabled for online and QR scan transactions with merchants.

How to add a bank account on Google Pay

Important: To prevent errors, make sure to complete your bank registration on the Google Pay app.

  1. Open Google Pay Add or remove payment methods (1).
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture Add or remove payment methods (2) Bank account.
  3. Tap Add bank account.
  4. Choose your bank from the list. If you don’t find your bank, it doesn’t work with Google Pay.

Tip:

  • To send a verification SMS to your bank, you need to give Google Pay permission. Standard SMS charges apply.
  • For Dual SIM devices, check your outgoing SMS settings. If your SMS is set to “Ask every time” for which SIM card the SMS should be sent from, you need to change this setting.
    1. Select Settings Add or remove payment methods (3) SIM cards Add or remove payment methods (4) Dual SIM settings.
    2. For SMS, select the mobile number associated with your bank.
  1. Select the account you want to add from the list of accounts.
  2. To verify your account, you need to add your debit card details.

Add or remove payment methods (5)

  • You can also use your Aadhaar to verify your account.
  1. Ensure that your Aadhaar is linked to the same mobile number that's registered with the bank account you want to add on Google Pay.
    1. To find the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar number, visit https://uidai.gov.in.
    2. Tap Select preferred language Add or remove payment methods (6) My Aadhaar Add or remove payment methods (7) Aadhaar Services Add or remove payment methods (8) Verify Email/Mobile Number.

Tip: If you can’t find the option to link your bank account to Google Pay through an Aadhaar number, contact your bank. To obtain contact details for your bank, visit www.digisaathi.info.

  1. Enter the first 6 digits of your Aadhaar number and follow the on-screen instructions.

Add or remove payment methods (9)

  1. To create a UPI PIN, follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you have an existing UPI PIN: You'll be asked to enter it.
    • If you don’t remember your PIN: Tap Forgot PIN and follow the instructions.

Have more than one account? Decide where to receive money

When someone sends you money, it goes into your primary account.

  1. Open Google Pay Add or remove payment methods (10).
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture Add or remove payment methods (11) Bank account.
  3. Tap on the account you want to update.
  4. At the bottom of the page, tap Set as primary account.

Tip: RuPay credit cards can’t receive money.

How to change or remove a bank account on Google Pay

Tip: To update a bank account, remove it and add a bank account.

  1. Open Google Pay Add or remove payment methods (12).
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture Add or remove payment methods (13) Bank account.
  3. Tap on the account you want to delete.
  4. Tap More Add or remove payment methods (14) Add or remove payment methods (15) Remove account.

How to add a RuPay credit card on Google Pay

  1. Open Google Pay Add or remove payment methods (16).

  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture Add or remove payment methods (17) RuPay credit card.

  3. Tap Add RuPay credit card.

  4. Choose the issuing bank. If you can’t find your bank, it probably doesn’t issue RuPay credit cards yet.

  5. To send a verification SMS to your bank, give permission to Google Pay Add or remove payment methods (18).

    • Standard SMS charges apply.

  6. For dual SIM devices, check your outgoing SMS settings.

    • If your SMS is set to “Ask every time” for the SIM card the SMS should be sent from, you need to change this setting:

      1. Tap Settings Add or remove payment methods (19) SIM cards Add or remove payment methods (20) Dual SIM settings.

      2. For SMS, select the mobile number associated with your bank.

  7. To verify your account, add your RuPay credit card account details.

  8. You can also use your Aadhaar to verify your account.
    1. Make sure that your Aadhaar is linked to the same mobile number that's registered with the RuPay card that you want to add on Google Pay.
      1. To find the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar, go to https://uidai.gov.in.
      2. Tap Select preferred language Add or remove payment methods (21) My Aadhaar Add or remove payment methods (22) Aadhaar services.
      3. Tap Verify email/mobile number.
    2. Once you’ve verified your mobile number details, enter the first six digits of your Aadhaar number.
      • Follow the on-screen instructions.
        Tip: If you can’t find the option to link your RuPay card to Google Pay through an Aadhaar number, contact your bank. To get your bank’s contact details, go to www.digisaathi.info.
  9. To complete the setup and create a UPI PIN, follow the on-screen steps.
  10. When the payment method is setup, identify the Virtual Payment Address (VPA) that corresponds to the RuPay credit card on the "Payment method details" screen.

Tip: The VPA that corresponds to RuPay-on-UPI can only be used at merchant checkout experiences. If attempted to use for P2P transactions, it will fail.

Transaction limit for RuPay credit cards on Google Pay

For RuPay-on-UPI transactions, the card issuing bank manages the limit of RuPay credit cards. To determine card limits, your bank takes the following factors into account:

  • RuPay credit card limit set by the card issuing bank
  • For RuPay credit card on UPI transactions, credit limits put in place by the card issuing bank with their risk management framework
  • Credit limit you set on the bank's mobile banking app

The credit limit set for RuPay credit cards aren't controlled by Google Pay. For more information, contact your bank through www.digisaathi.info.

Set a RuPay card as default for merchant payments

You can use RuPay cards added on GPay as the payment method when you pay at stores or to merchants. To set your RuPay card as the default form of payment:

  1. On the Google Pay app, tap your profile picture and navigate to payment methods.
  2. To modify the default settings, select your preferred Rupay card.
  3. To toggle off or on the default setting for the specific RuPay card, navigate to Card usage settings.

You can either turn off the default setting or select which RuPay card can be set as default to complete merchant payments.

Fix problems with your bank account

SMS charges

We send out multiple SMSes in order to increase the success rate of adding your bank account. You will be charged for the SMSes sent from your device.

Unable to add a bank account

You can only link bank accounts that have the same mobile number as the one you used to register with Google Pay.

Common errors when you add a bank account:

  • SMS errors
    If you encounter issues when you send an SMS, check the phone and SMS settings. To send or receive messages, your phone needs to have a good network connection. If you’re a prepaid mobile user, check your balance. Learn more about SMS-related issues.
  • No bank account found
    Before you add a bank account to Google Pay, you must:
    1. Activate mobile banking services for your bank account.
      • Learn how to activate mobile banking facilities.
    2. Confirm if your Google Pay mobile number is the same as the number registered with your bank account.
  • Mobile number linked to multiple accounts

    If you encounter issues when you add your bank account:

    1. Check if the phone number registered with Google Pay is associated with any other joint account with the same bank.
      • If yes, update the bank account that you're trying to add with a different phone number
    2. Consolidate all your accounts in a single customer ID and for any other queries, contact your bank.

  • SIM removal detected

    Check if you reset the device to factory settings or applied changes to the current software. If you have, update your device’s software or firmware settings. Learn how to Fix SIM-related errors.

SMS trigger

The process of sending an SMS to register your attempt to add a bank account happens in the background. This will help increase the success rate of adding your bank account to Google Pay. You cannot currently choose how many SMSes are being sent.

No option to verify my bank account with my Aadhaar

To verify your bank account with Aadhaar, your bank must support Aadhaar OTP-based onboarding. For more information, contact your bank. To get your bank’s contact details, go to www.digisaathi.info.

You can also verify your bank account with your debit card details.

An error says my mobile number isn’t linked to Aadhaar

To verify your bank account on Google Pay, update or link a mobile number with Aadhaar. Once the update is successful, try to add your bank account again.

Mobile numbers linked to Aadhaar and bank account are mismatched

To find the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar number:

  1. Go to https://uidai.gov.in.
  2. Tap Select preferred language Add or remove payment methods (24) My Aadhaar Add or remove payment methods (25) Aadhaar services.
  3. Tap Verify email/mobile number.

If the number doesn’t match the one linked to your bank account, update or link a mobile number with Aadhaar. Once the update is successful, try to add your bank account again.
