Students can expect their advisor to:

Be a responsive listener and advocate while supporting the development of your own self-advocacy, decision making, accountability, and responsibility. Help you explore your interests, goals, and talents and relate them to academic majors.

A financial advisor will work with you to get a complete picture of your assets, liabilities, income, and expenses. On the questionnaire, you will also indicate future pensions and income sources, project retirement needs, and describe any long-term financial obligations.

The role of an advisor is many-faceted. The advisor may act as mentor and friend, policy enforcer and trouble shooter, resource and idea person or listener/counselor, mediator, facilitator, referral person and sometimes as just another member of the group.

Be well informed of all plans and activities of the group. Regularly attend meetings and frequently consult with the officers. Provide direct assistance in the planning of the overall programs and indirect help in preparing for events. Offer suggestions and resources.

I have observed that students' expectations or hopes fall into three categories: learning, motivation, and respect. First, they want to learn something new and useful in each lesson. They do not expect the teacher to know everything. They want the teacher to convey knowledge or skills relevant to their lives.

A mentor is expected to initiate conversations with the mentee, set goals for the program, and schedule meetings for the mentoring sessions. A mentee also expects that his/her mentor will communicate his ideas, thoughts, suggestions, expectations, feedback, and criticism well.

Above all, you should expect a therapeutic environment that is compassionate, empathetic, and safe. A therapist or counselor's role is to offer you insights into your experiences, advice on how to handle issues, and evidence-based treatment for mental health conditions.
