AFCON 2025 Spotlight: A Ten-Man Start at Super Eagles Camp
Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, have kicked off preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a notable influx of talent. At least ten players have reported in as the team officially began gathering ahead of the continental tournament.
The team’s camp opened on Sunday at the Renaissance Hotel in Cairo, with head coach Eric Chelle and his full complement of assistants and support staff already present as the players began to arrive. Francis Uzoho was the first to land, arriving just after 2 a.m. local time, signaling that the squad was finally mobilizing in earnest. Uzoho is part of Chelle’s 28-man squad and is one of three goalkeepers chosen for the tournament, marking his return to the national setup after more than a year away.
Following Uzoho, Stanley Nwabali joined the group, followed by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, bringing the camp’s headcount to four.
The roster expanded further as six additional players—Amas Obasogie, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Igho Ogbu, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Tochukwu Nnadi—arrived, lifting the number at camp to ten.
More players are anticipated to arrive in the hours ahead as Nigeria intensifies its preparations for the upcoming AFCON challenge.

NAN reports that the three-time African champions are slated to hold their first training session later on Sunday. As part of the build-up, the Super Eagles are set to face Egypt in a friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday.
Nigeria eyes a strong run at the 2025 AFCON, aiming to improve on their runner-up finish from the previous edition, where they were edged 2-1 by host Ivory Coast in the final.
The Super Eagles have previously claimed Africa’s top prize three times, in 1980, 1994, and 2013. The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to kick off in Morocco on December 21 and is expected to conclude on January 18, 2026.
