Self Pay Options

Some patients’ may have an insurance plan, that does not cover the cost for bariatric surgery. If your insurance does not cover weight-loss surgery, it won’t pay for it even if you have serious medical problems related to obesity.

We have the coverage needed for self-pay patients so that any complications that might happen are covered. To find out more, call our office.

At the seminar you attend, payment arrangements are discussed as any financing we are currently offering. Over time, the insurance options and pricing may change.

Insurance For Self Pay Patients

Dr. Ravindra Mailapur and Madison Surgical Associates are proud to announce our affiliation with BLIS.

BLISCare Surgical Complication Protection

BLISCare is a one-of-a-kind insurance type that is only available to the physicians who are “best in class.”

It isn’t health insurance, but it protects patients of surgeons insured by BLISCare when there is an expense related to complications that can occur in a procedure covered by BLISCare. When you have a BLISCare doctor take on your surgery, you are protected from any surgical complication costs that may develop.

When a physician has BLISCare, he can give the patient additional medical care if the patient has a surgical complication that is covered. There are BLISCare plans that will cover these costs for as long as 60 months after the operation.

The high price of a high BMI

  • The term obese was defined as when an individual had a body mass index of more than 30. Being overweight was described as a BMI that falls between 25 and 29.
  • Adding up the many costs that go along with being obese or overweight, it has been found that in the U.S., being obese causes the individual $4,879 for women and $2646 for men annually. When you add the loss of life to these annual costs, the price becomes $8,365 for men and $6,518 for women.
  • Every year, the cost in the U.S. of being overweight is $524 for women and $432 for men.
  • The study found that obese women pay a whopping nine times more for obesity-related costs than people at a healthy BMI, and men pay six times more.
  • The study’s results showed that obesity and extra costs on the job affected women much more than men. These costs included disability, absenteeism, and lost wages.
  • The direct costs of health care for overweight individuals are about 66% of those extra, weight-related costs for women. It accounts for about 80% of those costs for men. It is also a serious cost for obese men, costing them about 30% of their overall medical costs. However, more is lost for women when wages are lost, so they average about 38%.
  • Studies have also shown that obese people have high costs related to their medical condition; they also have higher costs for things that are not medical costs.

These obesity-related, non-medical costs from the studies have included:

1. Short Term Disability
2. Productivity (presenteeism)
3. Wages
4. Sick leave (absenteeism)
5. Gasoline use
6. Disability pension insurance
7. The value of lost life because of an early death
8. Life insurance premiums

Economic Impact Of Obesity:

There are economic costs that come with obesity, and those costs affect us all and have severe consequences for your health. The yearly cost of healthcare for illnesses related to obesity is a stunning $190.2 billion. This is about 21% of all of the medical spending every year for the U.S.

The spending on just childhood obesity medical costs are $14 billion. The price of general obesity-related illnesses will significantly rise, especially for those who are obese as children and grow up to be obese adults.

If the rate of obesity stayed at the same level over time, the savings for medical costs over the next 20 years would be a whopping $549.5 billion.

Along with rising health care costs that come from obesity, the country will also pay more for unemployment benefits and disabilities related to obesity. The high job absenteeism for obesity-related reasons has caused businesses to suffer and have a loss of about $4.3 billion each year. Those absentee costs will also rise.
