When presenting on Quantum Computing, one of the most common questions I get asked is whether Quantum Computing is the same as AI. The short answer is they are definitely not the same thing but they can work together.

With AI being a not so new (but new to the masses) hot topic, it’s understandable that many are just getting their heads around what AI could mean for them, their organisation and society more broadly. And whilst we’re all coming to terms with AI, Quantum Computing is becoming a more widely publicised topic that is even more complicated and confusing than AI to understand. So, we have two new(ish) complex topics that are accidentally thought to be the same thing or a subset of one another when in fact they are quite different all together.

The simplest way to explain the difference between the two is that AI is a method, process, or software whereas a Quantum Computer is what you might run that process on, i.e., the hardware. Think of AI like an app on your phone and a Quantum Computer being the phone itself.

What do they have in common and how will they come together as Quantum Computing and AI both progress over time?

At present, AI is often processed on what we now refer to as “classical” computers, the fastest having only an absolute speck in the spectrum of the power of a Quantum Computer. It is estimated that Quantum Computers will be over 58 million times faster at processing information than the fastest classical currently available (currently supercomputers). Based on Quantum Mechanics, they will also process things quite differently meaning that the way we write code and algorithms for AI will need to change to suit this new way of processing information.

AI is definitely going to make up part of what Quantum Computers are used for and in preparation for a fully functioning Quantum Computer, some are already using new methods of implementing AI on hybrid Quantum Computers to generate results.

What’s really important is that AI will be significantly improved by Quantum Computing. There are many problems that still cannot be solved by AI given traditional computers cannot handle the complexity of them but a Quantum Computer will be able to solve them and will also make the processing of them more efficient.

In addition to solving new problems using Quantum Computers may be able to assist with one of the downfalls of AI being the Bias inherent in its performance due to things such as limited and erred data used to generate outcomes. A Quantum Computer has the ability to correct errors or reduce them due to the massive increase in processing capabilities and ability to ingest significantly more inputs to inform outputs. This could lead to AI use being safer and more effective.

So, there you have it, a very high level but hopefully simple few ways to think about the difference in these two game changing technologies and how they may be used together.

FAQs

AI vs Quantum Computing, no they are not the same thing? ›

The simplest way to explain the difference between the two is that AI is a method, process, or software whereas a Quantum Computer is what you might run that process on, i.e., the hardware.

Are AI and quantum computing the same thing? ›

"AI is a sophisticated software layer that emulates the very capabilities of human intelligence, while quantum computing is assembling the very building blocks of the universe to create a computing substrate," he explains.

What does Elon Musk think about quantum computing? ›

Elon Musk's proposed Quantum AI represents a significant leap forward in the realms of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. According to Smith and Johnson (2021), Musk envisions Quantum AI as a convergence of quantum computing's immense processing power with AI's problem-solving capabilities.

What is the difference between classical AI and quantum AI? ›

Here's why: Quantum computing is a method of solving complex problems in ways that classical computing cannot. Similarly, quantum AI can perform certain types of machine learning tasks much more efficiently than classical AI. By combining them, we create new and powerful capabilities.

Is quantum computing bigger than AI? ›

Others say that quantum computing is 'a much bigger, and more important, battlefield' than AI. This may be true but AI is giving quantum computing a run for its money. This is because 'Q-day' is a moving target.

Will AI solve quantum computing? ›

New research from Australia's national science agency has found AI could help solve quantum computing errors. This is a key step which could one day lead to quantum computers solving complex real-world problems.

Does NASA use quantum computing? ›

NASA's QuAIL team has extensive and experience utilizing near-term quantum computing hardware to evaluate the potential impact of quantum computing.

What is the biggest problem with quantum computing? ›

Cost and Accessibility. Currently, quantum computers are expensive and require very specialized environments to operate. Therefore, one of the big challenges for this technology is to make it accessible for widespread use.

Why is quantum computing not used? ›

Qubits (or anything from the quantum realm) are extremely small, so even the smallest perturbation or vibration can cause them to behave chaotically. Not to mention that in a large system with many qubits, such as a quantum computer, there are bound to be a few errors in the state of the qubits.

What is more powerful than AI? ›

The Remarkable Leadership Podcast. In the world of rapid technological advancement, it's easy to be dazzled by the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI). But I think that there's something even more powerful: the human element. AI has brought about astounding changes in how we work and live.
