Effects of underage drinking

Teenagers. Teenage years are the riskiest time to develop an alcohol dependence. Youth who start drinking before the age of 15 are 4 times more likely to be one who alcoholism affects later on in life. On top of that, an individual's brain is still developing well into their twenties.

First, let's look at the good news: Between 2002 and 2021, the prevalence of alcohol use in the past 30 days among 16- and 17-year-olds dropped by 58 percent. Among 14- and 15-year-olds, it fell 69 percent.

In 2022, it was estimated that around 63 percent of those aged 26 to 29 years in the United States were current alcohol drinkers, the highest rate of all age groups. Those aged 26 to 29 also had the highest rates of binge alcohol use.

There are four types of drinkers, each with different motivations, which include the social drinker, conformity drinker, enhancement drinker, and coping drinker. People consume alcohol for many different reasons.

However, Gen Z stands out from older generations in how little alcohol is used as a refreshment or to elevate meals. This contrast in alcohol usage suggests that, for Gen Z, alcohol is an occasional treat, whereas for older generations it is a considered as a regular, relaxing refreshment.

This group has the highest rates of drinking, consuming alcohol on an average of almost 248 days a year and binge drinking on 69% of them with a maximum of 15 drinks.

Naturally, California consumes the most alcohol in raw volume with a whopping 88.6 million gallons drunk in 2021 — nearly 30 million more than runner-up Texas's 58.9 million gallons. Floridians take the bronze, with 55.2 million gallons consumed in 2021.

Using alcohol at a young age can impact how a teen's brain develops, disrupt their sleeping patterns, delay puberty, make it harder to concentrate at school, and even increase their risk for liver and heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer.

Alcohol is especially risky for teenagers and young people. The brain continues to develop until around 25 years of age, making it more sensitive to damage from alcohol. Drinking alcohol can damage your brain and lead to health issues down the track.
