Both AMD & NVIDIA managed to increase their AIB GPU shipments in Q4 2023, marking a good end of the year for the discrete segment.
Q4 2023 AIB GPU Market Report: NVIDIA Dominant At 80%, AMD Climbs To 19%, Intel At 1% Share
The latest market survey is out from Jon Peddie Research and covers the AIB Discrete GPU markets which includes graphics cards. It is reported that the graphics card shipments increased by 6.8% vs the previous quarter and 32% vs the previous year. Starting Q1 2000, a total of 2.3 billion AIB GPUs have been shipped which adds to a total value of $482 Billion.
When it comes to the market share breakdown, AMD was the one to gain +2 points with its share rising to 19% (17% last quarter) which mainly clawed away NVIDIA's share which remains at a dominant position of 80% (82% last quarter). Meanwhile, Intel still holds just 1% market share and that's despite its Arc A770, A750, and A580 lineup being available in the mainstream market at attractive price points.
- JPR found that AIB shipments during the quarter increased from the last quarter by 6.8%, which is above the 10-year average of -0.6%.
- Total AIB shipments increased by 32% this quarter from last year to 9.5 million units and were up from 8.9 million units last quarter.
- AMD’s quarter-to-quarter total desktop AIB unit shipments increased 17% and increased 117% from last year.
- Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter unit shipments increased 4.7% and increased 22.3% from last year. Nvidia continues to hold a dominant market share position at 80%.
Further diving into the market share statistics, the total number of AIB units increased by 32% which now sits at 9.5 million units, and were also increased versus the previous quarter (8.9m units in Q3 2023). AMD's AIB discrete GPU shipments increased by 17% versus the previous quarter and 117% versus the last year while NVIDIA's AIB discrete GPU shipments increased by 4.7% from the previous quarter and 22.3% versus the previous year.
The increased unit sales for AMD GPUs can be attributed to the promotions and discounts on the older Radeon RX 6000 GPUs which still hold a lot of value while new entrants such as the Radeon RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT alongside the RX 7900 GRE in China were also strong contenders. NVIDIA did launch new cards under the "SUPER" series but they were released in Q1 2024 so their sales & statistics won't be revealed until the next quarterly update.
Intel on the other has great cards that are routinely getting major driver updates but the market still isn't very welcoming of the newcomer in the graphics segment. Hopefully, the market perception will change as the Intel graphics team works on its software and hardware ecosystem over time.
