Americans can get one-time payment up to $20k from $380m Equifax settlement (2024)

YOU may be entitled to a payment of up to $20,000 if you were affected by an Equifax data breach.

The breach was the largest of its kind in American history, with 147 million people affected.

Equifax has agreed to pay a multi-million-dollar settlement to resolve class action claims that it failed to protect consumers' personal information from a 2017 data breach.

The breach was the largest data breach of personal and financial information in American history, affecting almost half of the country’s population.

Equifax has not admitted any wrongdoing, but the company will pay out at least $380.5 million.

The payout entitles everyone affected to a $125 cash payment, or free credit monitoring services.

But for those who encountered expenses as a result of the data breach, Equifax will compensate up to $20,000 in reimbursem*nt and provide at least seven years of free identity restoration services.

The original deadline to submit a claim was January 22, 2020, but this has been extended to January 22, 2024, for those who either spent additional time recovering from fraud or ID theft caused by the breach, who will be compensated at $25 an hour, or suffered out-of-pocket losses during the extended claims period, as a result of the breach, up to $20,000.

Equifax is not the only company dishing out dough to settle a class-action lawsuit

Verizon customers could be eligible for up to $100 each.

It follows a suit that claims the company changed its customer agreement to more subtly disclose an administrative fee, even though it still charged the fee.

To qualify for a payment, you must have been a Verizon customer who paid the charge between January 1, 2016 and November 8, 2023.

Those eligible for payment should have gotten a notice about the lawsuit via mail or email.

Alternatively, customers have until April 15 tosubmit a claim online.

Meanwhile, Capital One recently sent out payments to millions of customers affected by a 2019 cyber attack.

Some customers on social media claimed their payouts were as high as $700.
