Is December a good time to visit Amsterdam?
December can be a lovely time to visit Amsterdam. However,it largely depends on personalpreference and what you’re looking for from your trip to the Dutch capital.
At this time of year, the city is filled with joyous cheer. Adorned with sparkling lights, charming decorationsand lively Christmas markets, it’s a great place to get hyped up for the festive period.
If you enjoy the holiday spirit and want to experience the magic of the season, December in Amsterdam can be a fantastic choice.
Despite the bustling atmosphere, December is pretty quiet in terms of tourism in the Dutch capital. As a city that’s typically overrun with tourists, this can be a great time to truly experience Amsterdam without the crowds.
Is Amsterdam expensive in December?
Although visiting Amsterdam can be quite expensive, hitting up the capital in December is much cheaper than visiting during spring and summer.
To compare, back in the summer, I was looking for a bed for one night. Even in a dorm room, prices we close to€100. I’ve just looked for accommodation during December and beds in dorm rooms start from just€17. What a bargain!
As you can see, the cost of visiting the Dutch capital varies greatly depending on the time of year. However, it’s generally pretty cheap in December.
If you rest your head at a hostel and take advantage of free things to do, you could easily explore Amsterdam on a shoestring budget.
Another thing to keep in mind is the cost of transportation. Although public transport costs stay the same, that can’t be said for taxis. If you’re using Uber or local taxi services to get around, they may charge a premium on certain dates such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year.
However, with such a fab public transport network in the city, do you really need to rely on taxis and Uber? Probably not…
