For years, Apple and Google have dominated the tech industry, setting trends and leaving other players in their rearview mirror. However, when it comes to the white-hot field of artificial intelligence, these erstwhile leaders are now the ones scrambling to keep up as Microsoft takes the pole position.
Apple has long positioned itself as an innovator, with slick marketing campaigns extolling the virtues of pushing the boundaries of technology. Yet in AI, Apple appears to be stuck in neutral. Its AI efforts have been fragmented across the company, lacking a unified strategy and clear leadership. While Apple has made AI inroads with Siri, its virtual assistant still lags far behind competitors like Amazon's Alexa and Google's eponymous Assistant in capabilities and adoption.
Google, the company that famously used to advise employees to avoid becoming "complacent winners," now risks being outflanked by more nimble rivals in AI. Despite its significant AI assets and prowess in areas like machine learning, Google has been slow to bring game-changing AI products to market. Some analysts criticize a lack of clear vision and prioritization of AI at the uppermost levels of Google leadership.
Into this void has stepped Microsoft and its CEO Satya Nadella. Once an AI also-ran, Microsoft has staked its future on the technology under Nadella's leadership. Billions have been invested, and Microsoft has rolled out impressive AI-powered products like the Bing chatbot and GitHub's AI pair programmer Copilot. While Google dawdled with AI experimentation, Microsoft forged ahead and beat them to market with powerful generative AI models that could reshape how we interact with computers.
The AI battle is still in its early innings, but the scoreboard right now favors Microsoft's bold plays. If the past is any prediction of the future, Apple and Google may soon feel the same disruptive forces that have unseated so many previously dominant players across industries. Both tech giants have incredible resources and talent to completely reshape the AI race. But maximizing that potential may require the companies to take a hard look at their AI prioritization, strategy and even leadership to recapture their innovative edge.
Unless Apple and Google want AI to be remembered as their Biggest Missed Opportunity, now is the time to double down and reassert themselves as tech trendsetters. Because right now, Microsoft is eating their lunch when it comes to the AI future.

Microsoft/OpenAI may currently lead in AI capabilities, but Google’s vast data access is unmatched. Imagine 1.8 billion Gmail users having AI assist with communication, tasks, and calendars. It’ll be fascinating to watch this unfold.
