Over the past few decades, technology users have become accustomed to their phones and computers wirelessly connecting to the internet. More recently, a new type of technology has grown in popularity: smart devices.

Smart devices usually refer to consumer electronics that can be controlled over the internet, providing greater convenience by allowing users to control them from afar, set up automations, and receive information from these devices. Washing machines, light bulbs, thermostats, and security cameras are all examples of common consumer electronics that can now be purchased with internet-connected features.

General smart devices statistics

In 2022 there were an estimated 57.55 million users of smart home products in the U.S.7 It's estimated that by 2025, over 57% of U.S. households will have at least one smart home device.

While increased security is a major reason consumers are interested in smart devices, there is also concern about the security of the devices themselves.As of 2021, consumers perceived smart lights and sprinkler controllers as the most secure smart devices while smart speakers, such as Google Assistant (now Google Gemini), were among the devices perceived as most vulnerable.

In 2023, 62% of smart home device users said they were concerned about the security of their devices, 10 percentage points higher than in 2022.

A third of smart home device consumers reported being the victim of a data breach or being scammed in the previous 12 months. The more devices a household had, the more likely they were to fall victim to a data breach. Among households that had 1 to 15 devices, 11% reported at least two data breaches in the previous 12 months while this was the case for 16% of those having 16 to 30 devices and 29% of those having 30 or more.

One study showed that homes with connected devices can be the targets of thousands of malicious attacks by hackers each week.

Despite their concerns, 77% of people who own smart home devices say the technology has positively impacted their quality of life. However, 41% said they disliked the device management required, such as troubleshooting, updating, and dealing with security requirements.

As of 2023, U.S. households had, on average, 21 connected devices, covering 13 device categories. This was one fewer device and device category than in 2022 and four fewer devices than in 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top reasons consumers gave for reducing their household’s connected devices were cost, outdated technology, and that a new device could replace the combined functionality of multiple others.

While growing in popularity, smart home devices are far from ubiquitous. Any given category of smart home device can only boast adoption in less than a third of U.S. households.Smart TVs, speakers, and streaming devices (such as Apple TV) are the most commonly found smart home devices in U.S. households.

In 2022, 76% of smart home device owners reported owning a smart TV and at least 20% reported owning smart speakers, streaming devices, or smart lighting.In 2021, 80% of smart home device consumers cited increased home security as a primary benefit of these devices.

Smart home devices still have a long way to go before reaching adoption rates on par with personal computers and smartphones. While smart home devices try to crack an adoption rate above 30% of households,smartphones can be found in most pockets across the U.S.
