Best Belgian Waffles Recipe

I have tried so many different ways to make a Belgian Waffles Recipe and never found one I loved. I made so many that had me sadly disappointed so I tossed in the towel on using other recipes friends had shared with me and got to work. It took a bit of time but it was well worth it because these Belgian waffles make it so much better since no where near my makes a good waffle.

For me it is important that I have an amazing Belgian waffle maker, seriously you need a good one. Spend the extra few bucks to get a good one, it is so worth it! It doesn’t matter if it is a square waffle maker or a round waffle maker, either one will work.

It is SUPER important that thebelgian waffle iscrispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. If you don’t cook the waffles long enough you are going to end up with soggy waffles and that is just gross.

How to freeze Belgian Waffles

If you are looking for an awesome waffle recipe that you can freeze, this one is great. I like the make a double or a triple batch of these homemade Belgian waffles and then freeze them.

It is easy to freeze waffles. Let the waffles cool and then wrap each waffle individually with plastic wrap. Place wrapped waffles into a freezer bag and zip shut. Place waffles in the freezer. They will stay fresh for about 2 months in the freezer. However mine tend not to last that long because everyone eats them. LOL.

To cook your waffles from the freezer, just pop them in the toaster in the morning when you want to eat them.

What makes Belgian waffles so good? ›

Belgian waffles are beloved for their extra-deep pockets—the better for filling with butter, jam, or maple syrup. They are often thicker than their American counterparts, and made with a yeasted batter and crunchy pearl sugar. There's nothing quite like a classic Belgian waffle.

Why are Belgian waffles so crispy? ›

Texture – In Belgian waffles, the eggs are separated. The yolks are whisked together with the other wet ingredients, while the whites are whipped to stiff peaks and then folded into the batter at the end. This creates a texture that is crisp on the outside and light and tender on the inside.

How to get waffles crispy in a waffle maker? ›

Grease the Waffle Iron With Cooking Spray

If you're looking for how to make crispy waffles in a waffle maker, try using cooking spray instead. Cooking spray won't burn as rapidly as butter, and will help achieve that satisfyingly crisp outside you crave.

What makes waffles taste better? ›

Waffle tip #1: Add a bit of spice.

Waffle batter is a simple combination of eggs, butter/oil, milk, flour, salt, and leavening. It's a blank palette, awaiting your favorite spice. I love both vanilla and cinnamon; add a touch of nutmeg for doughnut-like flavor.

Should waffle batter rest before cooking? ›

Recommended overnight or 2 hr resting – for the tastiest waffles, rest the batter overnight in the fridge or for at least 2 hours. This makes the flour grains absorb the liquid so it makes the inside of the waffles softer.

Should Belgian waffle batter be lumpy? ›

Don't overmix the batter: Like pancake batter, you'll want your waffle batter to be a bit lumpy. Plus, a lot of that scrumptious fluffiness comes from the separately whipped egg whites.

What are the two types of Belgian waffles? ›

Through the decades, Belgium's waffle styles diversified, resulting in two distinct groups – the crunchier, bread-like Liege waffle and a softer, lighter Brussels variety made with a yeast-leavened batter. Today, the Liege waffle incorporates crystals of pearl sugar for more crunch and caramelization on the outside.

Is waffle batter the same as pancake batter? ›

Pancake batter and waffle batter contain the same essential ingredients, but there are critical differences between these breakfast foods: Ratios: Waffle batter contains more sugar, butter, and eggs than pancake batter, making it a richer batter with higher fat content.

How to make perfect waffles with a waffle maker? ›

Heat a waffle maker following the manufacturer's instructions, brush with a little of the oil, then ladle in enough batter to just cover the surface. Cook following the manufacturer's instructions (usually 5-6 mins) until the waffles are golden brown and crisp.

How do you keep waffles crisp while making more? ›

Here are some other ways to keep the sogginess at bay:

How important is baking soda in waffles? ›

Pancakes and waffles typically both contain baking soda, which causes them to rise. As soon as the baking soda is combined with the wet ingredients (which contain an acidic ingredient, like often buttermilk), it starts producing carbon dioxide gas bubbles that cause the batter to rise.

Are eggs important in waffles? ›

Egg whites provide extra water to fuel the batter's steamy rise, while omitting the yolks ensures waffles bake up fluffy and crisp, but never cakey. A small portion of baking soda adds depth of flavor without neutralizing the tangy buttermilk.

Is it better to make waffles with butter or oil? ›

Use neutral oil instead

While butter is typically the fat of choice for any pan-fried cake, vegetable oil or rapeseed oil gives the waffle a better crisp. This is due to the difference in water content between butter and any neutral oil.
