Introduction to the Best Credit Cards for Amazon

If you're a frequent Amazon shopper, you'll want to use one of the best credit cards that earn the most points or cash back for your spending to get the biggest return on your purchases.

What are Amazon Credit Cards? Key Benefits and Features

Amazon issues its own co-branded credit cards, but other cards also earn elevated rewards on daily spending with this Internet giant.

When considering rewards and earning potential, consider which perks and benefits best enhance your personal finances — if you prefer cashback, for instance, stick with a card that earns a flat rate on each dollar spent instead of travel rewards you are less likely to utilize.

Whether you prefer earning flat-rate rewards or want a card that specifically earns a bonus on Amazon spending, there are several great options available right now. Before you decide on a credit card, be sure to consider your overall spending habits — and if you want other bells and whistles like travel insurance and purchase protection.

Here are the best credit cards to use for Amazon purchases in 2024.

Insider’s Take

The Citi® Double Cash Card doesn't come with a lot of bells and whistles. But earning 2% cash back (1 point per dollar at the time of purchase and 1 point per dollar when you pay your bill) without an annual fee is an excellent deal. It's also one of our picks for the best balance transfer credit cards.

Best Credit Card for Amazon Reviews

Prime Visa

The best credit card for Amazon and Whole Foods purchases is the Prime Visa.

If you're an Amazon Prime member, you earn 5% cash back on Amazon, Whole Foods, and Chase Travel℠ purchases, including Amazon gift cards. If you don't have an Amazon Prime membership, you'll earn 3% back on these purchases).

Cardholders also get 10% back or more on a rotating selection of items and categories on Amazon.com with an eligible Prime membership, which is one of the highest reward rates you'll find. This makes the Prime Visa a great option for your Amazon purchases.

The Prime Visa offers an interesting feature that can help you save money on interest. At Amazon checkout, you can choose a 0% promo APR for six to 12 months onpurchases of $50 or more, (then a 20.49% - 29.24% Variable APR). If you choose this option, you won't earn cash-back rewards, but it could make sense if you have a large purchase you want to pay off over time.

New cardholders who apply for the Prime Visa instantly receive a $100 Amazon Gift Card instantly upon approval exclusively for Prime members, which can be used right away on Amazon purchases.

The Prime Visa also earns 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and on local transit and commuting (including rideshare). Considering those are pretty common spending categories for most people, this isn't a bad card to have in your wallet, especially since it has no annual fee.

Learn more about this card in our Amazon Prime Visa card review.

U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards

The new U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewardslets cardholders choose which two popular retail brands to earn 6% cash back in (including Amazon, Walmart, and Chewy) up to $1,500 in combined purchases per quarter (1.5% back then after).

You'll also earn 3% cash back in one everyday category (such as gas and EV charging purchases, bills and utilities, or wholesale clubs) up to $1,500 per quarter, as well as 5.5% cash back on hotel and car bookings through the U.S. Bank Rewards Center. Otherwise, you'll earn 1.5% cash back on all other purchases.

It's a great card for simple rewards earning on everyday spending, especially for folks who frequently shop at major retail brands. And even after hitting the $1,500 cap each quarter, you'll still earn a strong 1.5% cash back on your purchases.

Cardholders are charged an annual fee of $0 intro for the first year, then $95, with the chance to earn a generous $250 bonus after spending $2,000 in eligible purchases within the first 120 days of account opening. In addition, cardholders get Visa Signature benefits, as well as decent travel and purchase protection perks.

But it doesn't offer a 0% introductory APR, just a regular 18.74-28.74% Variable APR. It also charges a foreign transaction fee, so it's not ideal for traveling abroad.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express cardholders can earn 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases on up to $6,000 per year (then 1% back) — and that includes Amazon.

Otherwise, cardholders earn 3% cash back on the first $6,000 spent at U.S. supermarkets each calendar year (then 1% back), 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1% back), and 1% cash back on other purchases (cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as statement credits or at Amazon.com checkout). That's an excellent rate of return for a credit card with no annual fee.

It's now offering a welcome bonus of a $200 statement credit after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new card in the first six months of card membership.

New cardholders can also get a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months from account opening, followed by a 19.24% - 29.99% Variable APR.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express also added some handy monthly credits for The Disney Bundle and Home Chef that can save you money (if you already use these services). Also, the card offers purchase protection, which is useful if you buy high-value items from Amazon (or anywhere else).

Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card

The no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is a terrific choice for earning 2% cash rewards on purchases (including Amazon) and it comes with a generous welcome offer to boot. New cardholders can earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first three months from account opening.

If you have larger purchases coming up, the intro APR offer on the card could also come in handy for saving on interest charges. You'll receive a 0% intro APR on purchases and qualifying balance transfers for 12 months from account opening (then a 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% variable APR).

Cardholders also get a handful of benefits, including cellphone protection, roadside dispatch, travel emergency assistance, and Visa Signature® Concierge access.

Citi®Double Cash Card

If you prefer a versatile 2% cash-back credit cardwith a solid earning rate at Amazon (and everywhere else), the Citi®Double Cash Card is a good pick, especially if you're looking for a long intro 0% APR balance transfer offer. Cardholders get a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months, followed by a 19.24% - 29.24% Variable APR.

You'll also earn 2 points per dollar (1 point at the time of purchase and 1 point when you pay your bill) on all purchases, and your earning potential is unlimited.

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card

If you do a lot of online shopping in general, including Amazon, the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card can potentially be very rewarding. It's got a bit more of a hands-on approach, though; cardholders can earn 3% cash back in the category they choose each quarter from a list: gas/EV charging, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement/furnishings.

The 3% and 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs earning rate is capped at a maximum of $2,500 in combined purchases per quarter, after which you'll earn 1% back on those purchases. The card also comes with a compelling bonus offer: a $200 online cash rewards bonus after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

One good thing about this card is the ability to change your 3% cash back category once per calendar month, so if your spending habits tend to change depending on the time of year, this could be a good pick. For example, choosing online purchases for the last quarter of the year (when folks tend to do a lot of holiday and gift shopping) could prove very rewarding, but in the summer months, gas or dining might be a better pick.

New cardholders also receive a 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and on any balance transfers made within 60 days of account opening, followed by a 19.24% - 29.24% Variable APR. There's no annual fee, but be careful using the card outside the US, because it charges foreign transaction fees.

Read more in our Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card review.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

It doesn't earn bonus points at Amazon (unless your account is eligible for an Amex Offer for bonus points at Amazon), but The Platinum Card® from American Express is also worth considering, especially for more expensive Amazon purchases. That's because it offers purchase protection for up to 120 days from your date of purchase, with a maximum of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account a year.

The card has a $695 annual fee, so it's not worth getting for this benefit alone, but if you enroll and take advantage of perks like monthly Uber Cash credits, airline incidental fee credits, and Saks credits, not to mention airport lounge access, it can be a great option.

Read more in our American Express Platinum card review.

Choosing the Right Credit Card for Amazon Purchases

The specific card recommendations above are easy picks, but here are two other categories for Amazon spend. Factors to consider include matching card features with your individual shopping habits, and maximizing your rewards and benefits on ancillary spend such as Whole Foods groceries.

Any Amex Card With an Amex Offer for Amazon

One benefit of having an American Express card is that you get access to Amex Offers. These are deals for bonus points or cash back when you shop with a specific retailer, and there are frequently Amex Offers for bonus points on Amazon purchases.

Since Amex Offers are targeted (they vary for each cardholder), you may not see Amazon offers in your account, but it's worth checking. Keep in mind that you need to add the Amex Offer to your account online and make a qualifying purchase to be eligible for the bonus.

Some of the best American Express cards include:

  • Best for dining rewards: American Express® Gold Card (this card also earns 4x points on the first $25,000 spent at U.S. supermarkets each calendar year, then 1x, and this category includes Amazon partner Whole Foods)
  • Best for cash back: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
  • Best for bonus points on travel: American Express® Green Card
  • Best premium business card: The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
