Our Expert Take
This flat-rate travel card offers an attractive welcome bonus and points that can be transferred to travel partners with no annual fee.
Why We Like It
The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card (rates & fees) simplifies earning rewards. You don’t have to remember which card to use where since nearly all purchases earn the same rate. Capital One miles are transferable to multiple airline and hotel partners and are also redeemable through Capital One Travel or to cover prior travel purchases. Like all other Capital One credit cards, there is no foreign transaction fee.
What We Don’t Like
The card’s overall earning rate is somewhat low. A higher rate is possible on travel purchases, but they must be made through Capital One Travel. Travel and purchase protection is limited and includes auto rental insurance and extended warranty.
Who It’s Best For
Young adults who are interested in earning travel rewards without paying an annual fee and want a simple use-it-everywhere card will benefit from this card.

The Chase Freedom Flex® combines a generous welcome bonus, solid earning structure and an abundance of perks and benefits while charging no annual fee.
Why We Like It
The Freedom Flex maximizes cash back through a combination of regular bonus spending categories and extra bonus rewards on quarterly rotating categories. The welcome bonus requires a low level of purchases to earn, giving new cardholders a quick chunk of cash back early on. The card also offers an impressive set of perks for a no annual fee card, including cellphone protection, an auto rental collision damage waiver, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, an extended warranty on eligible purchases and purchase protection.
Another helpful benefit for young adults starting out is the 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% – 29.24% applies. Balance transfer fee of up to 5% (min. $5) of the amount of each transfer applies.
What We Don’t Like
Cardholders must remember to activate the option to earn the quarterly bonus cashback. The elevated earning rate on travel bookings only applies to travel booked through Chase Travel℠.
Who It’s Best For
This card is a good match for young adults who are focused on earning cash back and don’t mind the organizational effort that’s required to manage the quarterly bonus categories.

Our Expert Take
In addition to its valuable ongoing rewards, the Discover it® Cash Back could be especially lucrative in the first year of card ownership thanks to its 1:1 Cashback Match™ of all earnings.
Why We Like It
The opportunity to double your first-year rewards makes this card unique. The card also offers a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and eligible balance transfers. Then, a standard rate of 18.24% – 28.24% variable applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies. The intro APR offer could be a plus for young adults who have some major purchases on the horizon.
Cash back can be redeemed easily by statement credit or by depositing it into a bank account. Rewards don’t expire and will still be paid out even if you close the card.
What We Don’t Like
Elevated cash back is only earned on specific categories each quarter—remaining purchases are not bonused. In addition, the quarterly bonus rate applies to only the first $1,500 spent in the bonus category. To earn the bonus rate each quarter, cardholders must remember to activate the option. The matching of first-year rewards takes the place of a traditional welcome bonus.
Who It’s Best For
If you anticipate a high level of purchases in the first year of card ownership, the Discover it® Cash Back’s first-year match of reward earnings could prove to be more valuable than the welcome bonus offered by competing cards.

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card earns extra points in multiple everyday categories that especially suit the lifestyle of young adults. Combine that with no annual fee and it’s a strong contender.
Why We Like It
The category bonuses are on common everyday expenses, which makes it easy to accumulate points. The card can be used for travel redemptions, gift cards, and cash back via statement credit. Cellphone insurance is provided with the card (up to $600, subject to a $25 deductible).
What We Don’t Like
While the points are transferable, Wells Fargo’s list of travel partners is short at present. The card offers little in the way of travel protections—an auto rental collision damage waiver is the primary benefit available.
Who It’s Best For
If you like to get out and about and find that your spending is concentrated on dining, travel and transportation, this card could be a good fit.
Pros & Cons
- No annual fee
- No foreign transaction fee
- Introductory APR period
- Plentiful reward points categories
- Protections include cellphone insurance
- Balance transfer fee
- No introductory balance transfer APR

Loyal Amazon customers benefit most from the Prime Visa, a card that generously rewards Amazon and Whole Foods purchases.
Why We Like It
New cardholders receive an Amazon gift card by simply opening the card—there’s no minimum level of purchases required. The card offers extra rewards on common purchases for young adults, such as gas, transit and dining. For a no annual fee card, it provides a solid list of travel and purchase protections.
What We Don’t Like
The card requires an Amazon Prime membership, which adds to the overall cost of holding the card. A regular Prime membership is currently $139 annually, while a student membership is $69 per year. If you cancel your Prime membership, your account will automatically be downgraded to the Amazon Visa Credit Card* which has a lower 3% earning rate for Amazon and Whole Foods purchases.
Who It’s Best For
The card works best for regular Amazon and Whole Foods shoppers. And if you’re frequently shopping at Amazon, you probably already have a Prime membership.

Young adults are typically renters, and the Bilt World Elite Mastercard®* is the only credit card that lets you pay rent without the transaction fee and earn points, up to 100,000 points in a calendar year.
Why We Like It
Rent is the largest monthly expense for many young adults and the Bilt card allows cardholders to quickly accumulate points on those rent payments. Monthly “Rent Day” promotions offer double points on spending (excluding rent) up to 10,000 points per first of the month. Effective 10/1/2024, the maximum amount of bonus points you can earn under this promotion will be 1,000 per month regardless of how much you purchase.
The card offers multiple redemption options, but the most valuable is the ability to transfer points 1:1 to an impressive collection of airline and hotel partner programs. Perks include cellphone protection (subject to a $25 deductible), trip cancellation and interruption insurance, trip delay reimbursem*nt, an auto rental collision damage waiver and purchase protection.
What We Don’t Like
No welcome bonus is offered for new cardholders. To earn rewards, you must make five or more transactions per billing cycle in order to earn rewards (rewards & benefits).
Who It’s Best For
Renters looking for travel rewards and benefits can get great value from the Bilt Card.

It’s almost impossible to earn rewards on what is the biggest monthly expense for many people, which is why anyone who pays rent should have a Bilt Mastercard in their wallet. Not only will you earn points just from paying your rent (up to 100,000 points in a calendar year), you’ll do it without being charged a fee for the transaction, and Bilt points are among the most versatile travel points around. (Pro Tip: Don’t redeem Bilt points to pay rent when you can get much more value for them for travel!).
Pros & Cons

The Credit One Bank® Wander® American Express® Card also sets itself apart by specifically advertising to people with average credit—a rarity in travel cards.
Why We Like It
Higher-than-usual rewards rates on gas and dining purchases help cardholders accumulate rewards quickly. This card also doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, so it could be a good option for those who plan to travel abroad.
What We Don’t Like
The card charges an annual fee which is an additional expense that a young adult may not have room for in their budget. Interest rates are also high and there are no introductory APR offers.
Who It’s Best For
Young adults with average credit scores who like to travel may be a good fit for the Wander Card if they can earn enough rewards to justify its annual fee.

Our Expert Take
It doesn’t get any simpler than the Citi Double Cash® Card, which earns a solid 2% cash back on all purchases—1% when purchases are made and another 1% when they’re paid off.
Why We Like It
The Citi Double Cash® Card has no categories to remember or offers to activate. With no annual fee, the card pays a good cash-back rate on all purchases. The intro APR offer on balance transfers is also longer than most: 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months. After that, the standard variable APR will be 19.24% – 29.24%, based on creditworthiness. An intro balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3%, whichever is greater, applies to transfers completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, the fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).
What We Don’t Like
There’s little in the way of benefits offered by the card. Points are only transferable to a small subset of Citi’s travel partners.
The card’s intro APR offer doesn’t apply to purchases. And it’s important to note that if you utilize the balance transfer offer, purchases will accrue interest immediately (with no grace period) until the “New Balance” on your statement has been paid in full, including the transferred balance.
Who It’s Best For
The card is a good choice for those wanting an all-around cashback card that’s simple to use.

Our Expert Take
The first-year Cashback Match™, which essentially doubles earnings, makes the Discover it® Student Cash Back card especially rewarding for new cardholders.
Why We Like It
Designed specifically for students new to credit, the card does not require a credit score to apply. Quarterly rotating bonus cash back on selected categories can boost your rewards if you plan your spending accordingly. There’s no minimum cash-back amount for redemption, so you can easily access your rewards. The card has no annual fee.
What We Don’t Like
To earn the extra cash back on the rotating categories, cardholders must remember to activate the feature. In addition, the bonus cash-back rate is limited to the first $1,500 spent in the category. Outside of the bonus categories, the cash-back rate is mediocre. The card offers little in the way of perks.
Who It’s Best For
The card’s application process doesn’t require a credit score, making it ideal for students with no credit history.

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Secured Visa® Card* offers extra rewards in common spending categories while helping you build credit for no annual fee.
Why We Like It
In addition to extra cash back on useful categories, this card provides an annual streaming credit. Your credit activity is reported to all three bureaus, which assists in developing a credit history. There is a path to automatically graduate to an unsecured U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card* if cardholders responsibly use the secured card over a period of time.
What We Don’t Like
As a secured card, it requires a security deposit of at least $300, which matches your credit line. That means cardholders must have the cash available to make the security deposit.
Who It’s Best For
Young adults who are new to credit or have had some credit missteps in the past should find this card a good match as long as they have cash available for the security deposit.
Pros & Cons

With no credit check and no annual fee or interest, the 5 Things To Know About The Secured Chime Credit Builder Visa Credit Card is focused on helping cardholders establish credit.
Why We Like It
There’s no minimum deposit¹ so the requirement for cash on hand could be less than most secured credit cards. Unlike other secured cards, your deposit can be used to pay your balance at the end of the billing cycle. The deposit must be replenished to restore your full credit line, but at a minimum, this provides flexibility. The card reports to all three credit bureaus, which helps build your credit score².
What We Don’t Like
The card requires you to have a Chime Checking®account that has received a single qualifying direct deposit of at least $200³. It doesn’t offer any rewards or benefits, and there’s no path to graduate to an unsecured card.
Who It’s Best For
Young adults who want to avoid a credit check while applying and interest charges⁴ after receiving approval could find this card a good start to establishing credit.
