Citi Custom Cash® Card
Citi Custom Cash® Card
The Citi Custom Cash® Card is our pick for best gas credit card thanks to its easy-to-earn sign-up bonus and generous cash back rate in your top spending category. We recommend using it as a dedicated gas card.
Key Takeaways
- With 5% cash back on up to $500 in gas purchases each billing period (if gas is your highest spending category), the Citi Custom Cash® Card may offer the best gas savings for most cardholders.
- There are two main types of gas cards: cards that offer a gas discount and cards that offer rewards on gas station purchases.
- If gas costs more than $3.50 per gallon for you, a rewards card may save you more than a gas discount card.

Gas discount cards vs. cash back cards
The price of gas may determine whether you can save more with a cash back credit card or a gas discount card. This table shows how a gas card with a flat 10-cent-per-gallon discount compares to a gas credit card with 3% cash back rewards. In this scenario, when gas prices reach $3.50 a gallon or more, the credit card will keep more money in your pocket.
Savings on 15 gallons of gas
Gas card with a 10 cent discount | Credit card with 3% cash back | |
---|---|---|
$3 per gallon | $1.50 | $1.35 |
$4 per gallon | $1.50 | $1.80 |
$5 per gallon | $1.50 | $2.25 |
What’s the average price of gas in the U.S.?
According to LendingTree data, the average U.S. gas price has recently ranged from as low as $3.08 in January 2024 to as high as $3.61 in April 2024.
Based on these averages, a cash back* card like the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express may offer more savings on U.S. gas purchases than a gas station card for many Americans — especially for summer travel when gas prices are high.
Note from the chart below that where you reside in the U.S. will have a big impact on the equation. Residents of the top 21 most expensive states for gas will likely net the most savings with a cash back credit card.

Pros and cons of gas credit cards
- Offer elevated cash back rates on fuel purchases
- May stack with gas station rewards programs
- Some offer a sign-up bonus
- May also offer high rewards rates in other spending categories
- Some gas cards can only be used at specific stations
- May have a spending cap for the elevated rewards rate on gas
- May have a high interest rate on purchases
- Could put you in debt if you don’t pay your bill in full each month
How to get a gas card
If you’re ready to get a gas card, here are a few steps to follow:
- Decide which gas card is right for you.
- Go to the issuer’s website to find the credit card application.
- Enter your information.
- You may be approved automatically, or you may have to provide additional information before the issuer can make a decision.
How to use a credit card at the gas pump
To use a credit card at the gas pump:
- Insert your card into the card reader or tap your card against the tap-to-pay symbol until the green lights flash.
- Or, to use a digital wallet, open the app, choose the right credit card and hold your phone near the card reader.
- Follow the prompts to complete your purchase.
Warning: Gas stations are a favorite spot for “skimming” (a type of credit card fraud that involves placing a device on a credit card machine to steal your card number). To protect yourself, look for anti-tampering tape around the credit card reader — if the tape is broken, use a different pump and inform the gas station attendant.

How to choose a gas credit card
-
SEE WHICH STATIONS YOU USE THE MOST
First, determine which gas stations you use most. If you’re loyal to one brand, you might want to consider a co-branded gas card. But if you use different gas stations or travel a lot, a general gas credit card may be a better fit.
-
Calculate the amount you spend on gas
Look at how many gallons your gas tank holds and how much it costs to fill up to determine whether a discount card (which typically offers a flat per-gallon discount) or a gas credit card (which typically offers a percentage of cash back) will save you more. If you have a 13-gallon tank that costs $50 to fill, a gas discount card that offers 10 cents off per gallon would save you $1.30 while a gas credit card that offers 3% cash back would put $1.50 back in your pocket at the pump.
-
DETERMINE REWARD EARNING PRIORITIES
The best credit cards offer rewards, and there are many types of cards — including cards that earn cash back, airline miles, hotel points and flexible points. Decide what kind of rewards you want to earn, and remember that a card with multiple elevated earning categories will allow you to earn on all purchases, while a gas discount card may work well as a secondary card used only for gas. Your decision might also be affected by how many credit cards you want to carry.
-
LOOK AT OTHER CARD BENEFITS
Many rewards credit cards also offer other perks or benefits that you might find useful. A credit card that offers travel protection or primary rental car insurance might be something that would provide real value to you.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, getting a gas credit card can help you build credit if you use it responsibly. Most credit card issuers report your account and payment history to the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), which can positively impact your credit — as long as you pay on time and keep your balance well below 30% of your credit limit.
The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Secured Credit Card is our pick for easiest credit card to get for gas rewards, as it’s geared toward consumers with limited / poor credit. It requires you to put down a security deposit, which is one of the best ways to get a card with bad credit.
The best gas credit cards are likely to require good to excellent credit — typically considered to be a FICO Score of 670 to 850, but some may accept fair credit, as low as 600. If you have no credit or poor credit, look into credit cards for beginners or secured cards.
Methodology
We selected the best gas cards through a review of cards available on LendingTree and from top issuers. The following factors influenced our top card picks:
Cash back rates or discounts: We looked for cards likely to save you the most at the pump.
Redemption options: How easy are the rewards to redeem, and how valuable are the redemption options?
Annual fee: If the card charges an annual fee, do the rewards outweigh it?
Sign-up bonuses: Does the card offer a large sign-up bonus?
Introductory and regular APRs: Does the card offer a 0% intro APR to help finance a big purchase or pay off a transferred balance? Is its regular APR reasonable?
Useful benefits, such as cellphone protection and extended warranty protection, influenced our choices as well.
*Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout.
