  • Cream cheese:The cream cheese adds a mild, tangy flavor that mellows out the garlic and herbs. It also provides a creamy base to help bind the ingredients together.
  • Unsalted butter:The butter gives the cheese that slightly crumbled texture it’s known for. If you choose to use salted butter, just omit the kosher salt from the recipe.
  • Spices and herbs:Garlic powder, kosher salt, black pepper, dried parsley, dried basil, dried dill, marjoram, and dried thyme all are blended together to give the Boursin cheese its distinct, savory profile.

Prep: Allow the butter and cream cheese to sit out on the counter for 30-40 minutes to soften. If you cut the butter and cream cheese up into chunks, it’ll help speed the process. Once they're soft add them to a large bowl.

Blend: Use either a hand mixer with a stand-alone bowl or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat the butter and cream cheese on high speed for 1-2 minutes, until combined and slightly fluffy.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl, then add in the remaining ingredients: all of the herbs and spices. Blend again for 1 minute until all of the herbs and spices are evenly distributed. Continue scraping the spread down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Serve: Transfer the Boursin cheese to a serving bowl and serve right away at room temperature with crackers, chips, or veggies. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge. Allow the dip to warm slightly before serving to soften or use it immediately in your favorite recipes likeBoursin chickenor Boursin cheese pasta.

Recipe FAQs

What is Boursin cheese good on?

Boursin cheese is a versatile cheese that can be used as a spread on crackers or bread, as a dip for vegetables or fruit, or as a topping for salads or pasta dishes.

Is Boursin cheese cream cheese?

Boursin cheese is similar in texture to cream cheese but is not exactly the same thing. While cream cheese is made from a mixture of cream and milk, Boursin cheese is typically made from a mixture of cream, garlic, herbs, and other flavorings.

Boursin cheese has a softer texture and a more distinct flavor than cream cheese. So, while they are both spreadable cheeses, Boursin cheese is not technically considered cream cheese.

What is Boursin cheese made of?

You make authentic Boursin from Gournay cheese, which is similar to cream cheese, but crumblier. You can achieve the same soft, crumbly, spreadable texture by mixing cream cheese and butter.

What to Serve with This Boursin Cheese Recipe

  • Crackers or bread: Boursin cheese is a great spread for favorite crackers or bread. It goes well with everything from plain crackers to crusty French bread. This is personally, my favorite way to eat it.
  • Veggies: It pairs well with raw or roasted vegetables, such as grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, or mini peppers. (Learn how to cut a bell pepper in multiple different ways.)
  • Fruit: Pair it with fresh fruit, such as grapes, apples, or pears, for a sweet and savory snack.
  • Charcuterie: Boursin cheese can be a delicious addition to a cheese board. It pairs well with cured meats like a salty prosciutto, salami, or ham. Serve it up with a chilled glass of white wine.
  • Pasta dish: Use it as a sauce for a Boursin cheese pasta recipe. Just mix it with a cup of pasta water or chicken broth to create a creamy sauce, and add some sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onion, fresh garlic, your favorite veggies, or a protein like chicken breasts. Top it off with parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes, and serve it next to some blanched green beans.
  • Salad:Mix it with some olive oil and vinegar, and drizzle it over your favorite greens.

Freezing and Storing Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge. Allow the dip to warm slightly before serving to soften.

Boursin keeps well in the freezer for between 3 and 6 months and should be defrosted in the fridge overnight. Just know that the texture may become slightly softer after freezing. The flavor will not be affected, though.
