Best Things to Sell on Poshmark: 7 Ideas for Beginners + Bonus Tips! | Hustle & Slow (1)

Poshmark has become a really popular online marketplace for buying and selling items online! It’s a great place for sellers to make some extra money and for buyers to find a good deal on items they’d already be buying, but for way less. But figuring out what to actually list in your Poshmark closet when you’re just getting started can feel a bit overwhelming. I’m here to help you with that!

In this post, I will give you some ideas for the best things to sell on Poshmark so that you can get started listing items and making extra cash! At the end, I’ll also include some bonus tips to make sure that your items sell quickly and for a good profit.

What can you sell on Poshmark?

On Poshmark, you can sell almost anything! The main thing that people sell on Poshmark are women’s, men’s, and kid’s clothing and shoes. It’s first and foremost a fashion app so that’s always what does well. However, Poshmark has really expanded the categories you can sell under so now you can even sell home decor, electronics, beauty and wellness products, and more.

Pro Tip: PosherVA is my favorite Poshmark tool! It automates so many of the tasks that you need to do in Poshmark so you can make more sales. Check it out!

Clothes you no longer wear

This seems like a given, but go through your own closet and find items you no longer wear. I swear, one of my favorite things to do is empty my closet and only put back the items I absolutely want to keep. Not only does it make sure my closet is only full of items I love to wear, I get to make money from what I don’t! From the pile that doesn’t go back in, you can decide which items to sell on Poshmark and which to donate (if they’re too worn, no longer in style, etc.) Most of us even find we have new items with tags still attached that we never wore which are a perfect candidate for listing on Poshmark because items with tags will get you a bit more money than a used item.

Makeup or Skincare products you never used

If you’re one of those people who just can’t pass up a good deal on makeup or skincare, but then you find that you don’t even use half of it, then you have plenty to list on Poshmark. I highly recommend sticking to brand new items, but some items that are opened can still do good like perfume or skincare products that are individually wrapped. Beauty prodcuts and skincare are things that many people buy regularly and the best deal hunters know they can get it for a discount on Poshmark rather than going into a store to buy it. This is a great way to make a little money on items you already spent money on, but found that you didn’t end up using it.

Secondhand clothing from thrift stores and yard sales

Are you really looking to turn this more into a side business? Or maybe you’d even like this to turn into a full-time job! Then you need to start sourcing for inventory because eventually you’re going to run out of stuff you can sell from your own closet.

One of the best places to check out is thrift stores and yard sales! So many people don’t want to bother with selling items themselves or would rather get the tax deduction from donating. When you shop at thrift stores or yard sales, you can usually find at least a couple of things in good condition that are worth more on Poshmark.

Don’t feel comfortable reselling stuff from thrift stores? Let me tell you a bit about thrift stores and the amount of clothing items they get donated. Most thrift stores aren’t able to sell everything they have. In 2018, 17 million tons of textile waste ended up in landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Trust me when I say that you should not feel bad selling stuff from thrift stores, there’s plenty to go around and you’re helping prevent items from going into landfills.

Help friends and family by selling their items

Selling for people you know can be a great way to make extra money without spending any upfront. It’s called consignment when you take someone else’s items, sell for them, and then you split the money once it has sold. You’ll have to decide how to split the profit, but that’s totally up to you. Just make sure you consider fees, shipping supplies, and your time. A 50/50 split after fees is usually a good place to start, though some people will give the original owner of the items a little more like 60%.

Popular brands featured in parties

Maybe you have plenty of ideas of where to get stuff to sell, but you’re not sure what kinds of items actually sell well. If you pay attention to Poshmark parties, these will clearly show you which brands are the top sellers on Poshmark. Poshmark is always going to focus their parties on brands that are selling well to draw people in and encourage sellers to list more popular brands. There are three parties every day, so a quick check to see what kind’s of parties and what brands are featured is a good way to keep up to date with the best things to sell on Poshmark.

Trendy home decor items

More recently, Poshmark added a home section to their marketplace. When they did this, it transformed Poshmark from just a fashion marketplace to one that features all kinds of items. Many people find success selling home decor items and small, lightweight appliances on Poshmark. This is especially great for Poshmark sellers who aren’t able to find a lot of popular clothing brands in their area. Now, if you have a bit of style or an eye for interior decor, you can find home decor items that people are searching for on Poshmark.

Keeping an eye on home design blogs and social media accounts, as well as paying attention to what people are pinning on Pinterest can keep you in touch with what kinds of items people are looking for to decorate their homes.

Vintage clothes and home decor

Vintage has always been popular, but I don’t think it’s ever been as popular and widely sought after as it is today! The important thing to keep in mind when it comes to vintage is that not everything vintage will sell. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean there’s a market for it. Learning different vintage styles and what’s popular right now will help you source the right types of items to sell on Poshmark. There are people who focus 100% on vintage and make a full-time income doing it, so if you have a love for vintage, then this could be a great niche to get into.

Bonus tips for selling items on Poshmark

So, now you have an idea of what you can sell on Poshmark. Maybe you even have some items ready to go already. Here are some of my best tips for beginners who want to start selling on Poshmark.

Sell items in good condition

It may be tempting to pick up an item that you know is a popular brand or a trending style even if it has a small hole or stain. However, more often than not these items won’t sell and if they do it’ll be for much less than an item in good condition. It’s usually not worth it to pick these items up unless they have a really high resale value. Also, make sure that you clearly state the item has flaws so that there are no misunderstandings with the potential buyer.

Share and send offers daily

One of the best ways to make your items more visible is to share them all the time, at least once a day. Sending offers to likers daily is also a good practice if you want to increase your sales. Sure, you might get people who make offers or buy full price, but by sending an offer you have a better chance at selling that item.

Because sharing and sending offers is time consuming, I love PosherVA which shares my closet automatically on a schedule I set as long as my computer is on. I can also use it to send out bulk offers to people who have liked my items. It’s my favorite Poshmark tool, hands down.

List items regularly

Poshmark is definitely not a set it and forget it type of selling marketplace. Ensuring that you always have new items coming in will draw more people into your closet. Not only does having a lot of new items draw more people in, people can also bundle items in with other items to get a better deal. This will increase your order amount! So listing regularly to keep your closet fresh and have a lot of variety for people to choose from and potentially bundle is a great way to keep things moving in your closet. Because the shipping label is flat fee, many buyers love to be able to buy 2 or 3 things instead of paying shipping for just the one item.

Stay organized

This isn’t so much about making sales as it is about making sure that items don’t get damaged or lost. As someone who has been selling online for years, I’ll tell you that you may think you know where everything is. But once your closet gets to 50 or 100 items, it gets harder to find things! Wasting 15 minutes searching for a pair of jeans that just sold is so silly when you could just get organized from the start. If you need a little help, grab my free inventory spreadsheet which allows you to keep track of all of your inventory, how much you paid for it, and where you have it stored.

Keep your prices competitive

We’re friends here, so I can be honest with you, right? Buyers shop on Poshmark for the reasonable prices. It doesn’t matter what YOU think an item is worth, it only matters what buyers want to pay for it. Make sure that when you price an item, you’re pricing it competitively with other similar items. If you price too high, it could scare away potential buyers and instead of making a sale, the buyer will go for the other items listed at a lower price.

Remember, just because something has a retail price of $300 doesn’t automatically mean you can sell it for more than something that had a retail price of $50. There are plenty of luxury items that don’t sell well, so pricing with the market is extremely important.

Take great photos

You don’t have to have a professional photo set up to get good photos! All you need is a clear, clear background and some natural light. Taking pictures by a window on a sunny day is a great way to get good lighting for photos.

Many Poshmark sellers who decide to make this a business will eventually invest in a ring light or soft box lights, but you can definitely photograph items without a lighting set up. You may just need to rearrange things in your home a bit to get the right spot.

My best tip is to take a few pieces you plan to sell and take photos in different places around your house. This way you can compare and see where the best lighting is for photos. Remember, that cover photo is the thing people will see when scrolling through Poshmark so making sure it’s a good photo that will catch their attention will increase your chances of them clicking on your item instead of someone else’s. And including photos of different angles will clearly show your buyer what they’re buying so that they’re more confident in buying from you rather than a seller who just has one or two photos.

Share your closet daily

If you search for an item on the Poshmark app (and on the website), you’ll see that it’s usually sorted by “Just Shared”. So if there are a lot of items that were shared after yours, it’s going to be hard for a potential buyer to see yours! Sharing your closet AT LEAST once a day is recommended, but I recommend doing it two to three times. The best times to do this are in the morning and in the evening, or anytime on weekends, since this is when a lot of people are on the app.

Relist your items regularly

One other thing people will do is search by “Just In” and this means items that were just listed. The most recently listed item will be at the top of this list, so relisting your items regularly is always a good idea. You can do this in Poshmark directly by clicking “edit listing” and going down to “copy listing” to create a new listing that is an exact copy of your current listing and then you can just delete the old one. However, I found that the best way is to use Vendoo which will delist and relist my items with the click of one button.

You’ll need to decide how often you want to relist items, but I usually try to do it every 1-2 months as I find time.

Share to Posh parties

The Poshmark parties that happen three times a day are just an extra way for you to promote your items! You can see the details of parties before they actually start so taking the time to check them out and see if you have any items that are eligible to be shared to the party can get more eyes on your listings. If you’re lucky, you might even get a host pick which puts your item in front of even more people!

If you’ve decided to make Poshmark your new side hustle, then I hope this post has helped you get started! Start gathering items to sell and listing them. Once you’ve done a few listings and made a few sales, things will get easier and you’ll get better at it with the experience you gain. You’ll start to figure out your favorite brands to sell along with how to take better pictures and work more efficiently.
