Consider the following factors when comparing vision insurance plans and looking for the option that best fits your needs.
Wide coverage
When it comes to vision insurance, it’s easiest to get coverage from a plan that is offered in every state and has an extensive number of doctors within the provider network. In fact, it’s more convenient and helps prevent gaps in coverage if you move or need care while traveling.
UnitedHealthcare’s vision insurance policies are accepted at over 120,000 access points, Humana has 95,000 locations in its vision insurance provider network and the EyeMed Advantage network has over 70,000 providers and locations.
Low monthly premiums
Pricing varies based on your plan and coverage levels. It’s important to consider your budget when looking for a new vision insurance plan and avoid pricier vision plans if you don’t need a high level of coverage. For instance, a generous frames allowance may not be needed if you don’t need glasses, but that allowance may be a vital part of a plan if you have glasses.
Our research found that the cheapest vision insurance policies are EyeMed Healthy ($5 a month), UnitedHealthcare’s Plan A ($11 a month) and Anthem’s Blue View Vision Value ($12 a month).
Full or partial coverage of annual eye examinations
Vision insurance covers annual eye examinations, but not all vision insurance companies cover these exams completely. Vision insurance policies also typically require a copay for eye exams, but our research found that EyeMed Healthy does not have a copay for exams.
Eyewear and contact lens allowances
Whether you need glasses or contacts now or in the future, understand the allowances provided by your vision insurance plan for these expenses. Vision insurance covers frames for glasses and contact lenses up to a specified dollar amount, such as $150 or $200. A plan may require that you only get one allowance per year, and you have to choose between contacts and frames. If you exceed the amount, the policy may offer a discount on the rest of the costs.
Ease of access
Accessibility is important when researching and enrolling in a vision insurance plan, as well as when you need to file a claim or reach a customer service representative. Reading reviews can give you a helpful idea of how responsive the vision insurance company you’re considering is in times of need—not just when you’re trying to sign up for coverage.
