Cambodia: A Cautionary Tale for Indonesian Migrant Workers
In a recent statement, the Indonesian government has issued a stark warning to its citizens about the dangers of seeking employment in Cambodia. The Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar, has emphasized the importance of caution, highlighting the country's lack of formal recognition as a safe destination for Indonesian migrant workers.
Cambodia, he stressed, is not an officially recognized destination for Indonesian workers, and any job offers involving placement there should be considered illegal. This is due to the absence of formal cooperation between Indonesia and Cambodia to ensure the safety and rights of Indonesian workers.
The government, through the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), has been actively issuing warnings to prospective workers, advising against choosing Cambodia as a work destination. This is a crucial step in safeguarding Indonesian workers from potential exploitation and human trafficking, which frequently targets Southeast Asian workers.
However, for those already employed in Cambodia, the government is committed to providing protection. Close coordination among the P2MI Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh ensures that these workers receive the necessary support.
Minister Muhaimin also urged prospective workers to use official and verified channels under the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) for overseas employment. This is a critical measure to prevent human trafficking and ensure the safety of Indonesian workers abroad.
The government's efforts to protect Indonesian migrant workers extend beyond Cambodia. Related news highlights the focus on labor-intensive jobs in Turkey, with the KP2MI and Foreign Ministry collaborating to strengthen migrant worker protection across various destinations.
