Beware of the Johor-Singapore Housing Subsidy Scam: Over S$1m Lost! (2026)

Heartbreakingly, over S$1 million has vanished into thin air due to a cunning scam preying on hopes for affordable housing. This elaborate scheme falsely promises a 'Johor-Singapore Housing Subsidy,' leaving at least 21 individuals financially devastated since September.

In a media release on Friday, November 14th, the Singapore Police Force revealed the details of this deceptive operation. The scam, which initially surfaced in September, uses online platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to spread its lies. The fraudsters cleverly craft posts advertising a 'JBSG Housing Subsidy Program' or 'Free Homes Across the Causeway.'

These advertisements are designed to appear legitimate, falsely claiming a joint effort between the Singapore and Johor governments to offer subsidized housing. But here's where it gets controversial: some of these ads even include forged documents, complete with signatures purportedly from the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia!

When unsuspecting individuals click the embedded links, they're directed to WhatsApp. There, they're prompted to share sensitive personal information, including NRIC numbers, home addresses, and email addresses. The scammers then instruct victims to transfer money online for fabricated 'legal and stamp duties' or to hand over cash to unknown individuals.

The Singapore Police Force has issued a clear warning: this housing subsidy initiative is entirely fictitious. Providing personal information to these scammers can lead to further fraudulent activities. The police strongly advise against sharing personal details and emphatically warn against transferring money or valuables to strangers.

What do you think? Do you believe the use of forged documents adds an extra layer of deception, making this scam particularly insidious? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
