The Bièvres Photography Flea Market: A Photographer's Paradise
The Bièvres Photography Flea Market, an annual event in the small French town of Bièvres, is a photographer's dream come true. This June, the 62nd edition of the Foire Internationale de la Photo will once again transform the town into the capital of photography for a weekend. With a relaxed atmosphere, free entry, and an extraordinary range of offerings, it's an event that serious photographers should mark in their calendars.
The market itself is a treasure trove for photography enthusiasts. It's not just about cameras and lenses; you'll find advertising materials, travel photographs, family albums, cinema equipment, and darkroom supplies, too. The variety is part of the pleasure, with serious specialist dealers and enthusiastic collectors alike offering their wares. This is the place to find bargains, from wooden field cameras to vintage Leicas, expired film, and even print processes you've never heard of.
But the market is just one part of the story. Alongside the secondhand market, there's a new equipment and services market, where camera brands, film suppliers, and printers showcase their latest offerings. Whether you're after a new roll film scanner or just want to stock up on darkroom paper, it's worth a walk through.
The artists' market adds another dimension entirely. Here, photographers sell and show their own work, with a jury, chaired by Bruno Dubreuil, visiting each booth on Sunday morning. Awards are presented on Sunday afternoon, adding a fun, competitive edge to the event.
The guest of honor this year is Jean-Christophe Béchet, a significant photographer who has lived and worked in Paris since 1990. Béchet's work is notable for its restlessness, exploring black-and-white and color, film and digital, 35mm and medium format, and what he calls 'photographic accidents'. He's less interested in mastering a single tool than in finding the right one for each project.
Two exhibitions will be on show during the fair. At the recently renovated Grange aux Fraises, Savage Materiality explores photography as a physical, tactile medium. Béchet's fascination with fragile, random photographs, those that blend technique and improvisation, is on full display. His second exhibition, Macadam Colour, at the Maison des Photographes et de l'Image, brings together 30 years of color street photography, capturing the spirit of an era and the identity of a place.
The Bièvres Encounters programme also runs across both days, with talks and presentations from photographers and specialists in technique, equipment, and travel photography. There's even a mobile darkroom on site, with black-and-white development and printing workshops, a portrait session using a box camera, and a photowalk on Sunday.
If you're planning to attend, it's worth noting that Bièvres is easily accessible from central Paris and the Porte d'Orléans. Free parking is available on Saturday afternoon and Sunday at the Burospace site, with free shuttle buses running to the fair. The fair runs on Saturday, June 6, from 1 pm to 7 pm, and Sunday, June 7, from 8 am to 6 pm. Entry is free throughout.
In my opinion, the Bièvres Photography Flea Market is a must-visit event for any serious photographer. With its unique blend of history, technique, and creativity, it's an event that will leave you inspired and eager to capture your next masterpiece.
