Blue Jays Outright Yaríel Rodríguez: What's Next for the Reliever? | MLB Trade Rumors & Analysis (2026)

The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a tough decision regarding reliever Yaríel Rodríguez, and it could significantly impact their future. Rodríguez, who at times was a crucial part of the team's success in the 2025 season, is now potentially on the outside looking in for 2026.

The Blue Jays made a surprising move by outrighting Rodríguez from their 40-man roster. This means he was designated for assignment, cleared waivers (with 29 other teams passing on him!), and could have been lost for nothing if another team claimed him. While he remains in the organization for now, competing for a spot in spring training, a trade is still possible.

During the 2025 season, Rodríguez was a dominant force in the bullpen, especially in high-pressure situations. He was nearly untouchable in May, allowing only one run in 17 innings and maintaining an ERA below 2.00 from May to July. But here's where it gets controversial... In the season's final months, his performance dipped, and he was even left off the World Series roster.

Rodríguez, who signed a contract before the 2024 season, still has three years remaining on his deal. He's owed a hefty $11 million across 2026 and 2027, with a player option of $6.3 million for 2028. Over his first two seasons, he posted a 3.83 ERA in 87 appearances and 22 starts. This was largely in line with what the Jays expected, providing bullpen depth and flashes of brilliance. However, his 2025 season was marked by inconsistency, and his performance metrics suggested he might have been even worse than his ERA indicated.

And this is the part most people miss... The Blue Jays have gained a lot of depth in the bullpen, with promising performances from pitchers like Tommy Nance and Braydon Fisher. They've also added more rotation options, such as Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce. Consequently, Rodríguez, with his significant salary, has become expendable, freeing up funds to address other team needs.

While Rodríguez could still earn his way back onto the 40-man and 26-man rosters, the team may still look to trade him this winter. The rest of the league seems hesitant to take on his remaining $17.3 million guaranteed over the next three years. However, the Jays could potentially find a trade partner by covering part of his salary or taking on another contract in return.

What do you think? Will Rodríguez find his form again, or is this the end of his time with the Blue Jays? Do you agree with the team's decision, or would you have handled the situation differently? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
