Are you ready to be inspired?

And now I will let Beth tell you about her project in her own words…

Hi everyone! I am back again to share my May design team project. I have been inspired by the many floral, bird, butterfly and garden images found in the bundles on The Graphics Fairy premium membership site; since the weather is getting better and it is beginning to be garden season, this month I have created a botanical themed journal that combines many of these elements. This journal would be a wonderful place to document the changing seasons in your garden!

The overall feel of this journal is a bit grungy, and a bit shabby chic! Let me show you how I have created this look.

If you have been following my work, you will know I love to use vintage book cover images for my journals. For this project, I chose to use one from the Emma bundle. It is a very faded green and I thought it was the perfect look for the cover of this project. I made a hard cover from chipboard and then adhered the printed journal cover images to the front and back covers and spine. I have edged the cover with some antique gold Rub n’ Buff and used some jute twine as a closure. I have done a hidden spine to add the signatures to this journal so that the wonderful spine image is visible.

I love adding tabs to my journals. This time, I used a die to cut my tabs, folded the die cut in half and added some coffee dyed cheesecloth under the tab before gluing it to the page. I added some aged cellophane tape and a floral image to the tabs to complete the shabby look. I love how these turned out!

I have added one of my floating envelope pockets to the journal. This time I sewed some coffee dyed sheer fabric to the envelope to create the front pocket , adding a dictionary definition of “floral” and a rose die cut and trim to the top. For the tag insert, I added one of my die cut tabs and a delicate butterfly image.

This Inventory tag was coffee dyed and then a collage of kraft glassine paper, sheer fabric and one of the beautiful floral images from The Graphics Fairy was sewed on. I added a die cut tab, a scrap of lace and a couple of Tim Holtz rub- on words to complete the look.

To create the grungy/shabby chic look, I have added lots of coffee dyed trims, papers and stamping throughout the journal, with a few rusted paperclips and pins used to add in extra images.

This journal took its own path as I was working on it, adding the layers of trim and embellishments to the beautiful Graphics Fairy images to end up with this wonderfully shabby creation. I love the end result!

FAQs

What is a vintage junk journal? ›

A junk journal is a handmade book filled with personal and recycled materials to store memories and ideas. Like its name implies, the pages are filled with material that's usually thrown away. Think newspapers, old train tickets, fabric scraps like lace and ribbons, mismatched buttons, stamps, and more.

Should I throw out old journals? ›

Read through one old journal a week. If it's full of entries that will do you no good, or is a reminder of a sad or bad part of your life, toss it in the recycle bin or have a bonfire/journal burning party. Who wants all that negativity stored so closely? Do away with it forever.

What is the difference between junk journaling and scrapbooking? ›

Scrapbooks often come in a bound to a large sheet of thick, high-quality paper or a large album. The materials used to decorate as well are of good quality. Junk journals are usually old or existing notebooks you find at home or handmade notebooks such as magazine pages, bound together.

What is the point of a junk journal? ›

In a junk journal, objects normally destined for the trash are collected and pasted inside a notebook. There's no need to buy expensive acid-free paper, embellishments, or fancy books. Rather than discarding meaningful objects from your day-to-day life, you give them a home in the journal.

What is the idea of a junk journal? ›

When you create a junk diary, seemingly insignificant pieces of paper, rags, waste cardboard boxes, etc. will be given new life. This useless waste becomes a source of creativity, adding unique emotions and meaning to the diary.

Is there a market for junk journals? ›

The first place is craft fairs, farmer's markets or flea markets. Check out the local schedule at your community center, local churches, or other event spaces in your community. Look up listings for events in nearby towns. You'll likely find some upcoming markets where you could sell your junk journals.
