Brine rats are Slayer monsters that can be found in the Brine Rat Cavern near Rellekka. They are notable for being the only monsters to drop the brine sabre. A Slayer level of 47 is required to fight them.

They are only assigned to players who have progressed in Olaf's Quest to the point where they need to enter the Brine Rat Cavern (requiring a spade to enter). Additionally, they can be killed as an alternative for a rat Slayer task provided the player has the appropriate Slayer level to do so.

Killing a brine rat is a requirement for completing the medium task set in the Fremennik Diary.

Tips[edit | edit source]

Brine rats have relatively low Defence, but fairly high Strength and Attack. As such, it is recommended to bring food if players do not have high (~70) Defence.

Alternatively, players can bring Bones to peaches (tablet) to convert their bones drops to peaches, which heal 8 hitpoints each. Bringing logs and a tinderbox to cook and eat the Raw rat meat and other raw fish that they drop is also an option, though this is significantly more time consuming and less efficient than using peaches.

There are two safespots, one being the black bones to the south-east, and the other in the north-west corner of the cave. If the brine rats are in the north half of the cave, you are able to safespot them from behind the bones in the corner.

Brine rats frequently drop raw swordfish and occasionally drop unnoted raw sharks in addition to raw rat meat, so bringing a tinderbox and a couple of logs may be advisable. Alternatively, Olaf, outside the caverns, has a permanent fire located beside him, so players can collect the unnoted raw fish/rat meat drops and cook them on his fire if they are willing to exit and re-enter the caverns multiple times. A fish barrel can be used to store the unnoted raw fish drops.

Rat bone weapons can be used to kill brine rats, and have an added 10 hitpoints of damage added to the player's max hit, making these weapons incredibly effective compared to other weapons with similar stats. Even compared to the highest tier weapons, rat bone weapons might still be more effective depending on your stats and boosts, as the difference in max hit based on other weapon's strength bonuses might not be enough to reach 10 hitpoints of extra damage towards their max hit.
