Certificate installation on devices with Android 11+ | AdGuard Knowledge Base (2024)
info
This article is about AdGuard for Android, a multifunctional ad blocker that protects your device at the system level. To see how it works, download the AdGuard app
To be able to filter HTTPS traffic (which is extremely important as most ads use HTTPS), AdGuard needs to install its certificate into your device's user storage. On older versions of the Android OS this was done automatically, but on Android 11 and later users have to install it manually.
Tap Save at the bottom of the opened Download folder.
After saving, tap Open Settings.
Tap More security settings → Encryption & credentials → Install a certificate → CA certificate.
You might see a warning. If so, tap Install anyway and enter your PIN if necessary.
Select the AdGuard certificate file. Its name should look like adguard_1342_020322.crt.
You're all set! Once the certificate is installed successfully, you've enabled HTTPS filtering.
Please note that the steps provided are based on the Google Pixel 7 smartphone. If you're using a different Android device, the exact menu names or options might vary. For easier navigation consider searching for a certificate by entering “certificate” or “credentials” in the settings search bar.
If you experience issues during the manual certificate installation (for example, you installed the certificate, but the application keeps ignoring it), you can follow one of the solutions below.
Restart AdGuard.
Try to install the correct certificate (AdGuard Personal CA) one more time.
If you still encounter a problem and can't install the certificate, please contact our support team at support@adguard.com.
Tap More security settings → Encryption & credentials → Install a certificate → CA certificate. You might see a warning. If so, tap Install anyway and enter your PIN if necessary. Select the AdGuard certificate file.
Open Device Settings.Go to Security > Encryption and Credentials.Depending on your device, go to Install from Storage or Install a certificate.Select CA Certificate.
In cryptography, a certificate authority or certification authority (CA) is an entity that stores, signs, and issues digital certificates. A digital certificate certifies the ownership of a public key by the named subject of the certificate.
If you accidentally remove legitimate certificates, you compromise secure connectivity to services and websites. This exposes your Android device to potential security risks. Your device might start popping up security warnings every time you try to access some websites, especially those that are SSL encrypted.
Android's root certificates exist in the read-only partition /system/etc/security/cacerts. Viewing the installed root certificates on Android depends on the Android version you're using.
A certificate authority (CA) is a trusted entity that issues Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates. These digital certificates are data files used to cryptographically link an entity with a public key. Web browsers use them to authenticate content sent from web servers, ensuring trust in content delivered online.
Android SDK tools automatically generate a debug certificate and use the certificate to sign your Android package kit (APK) when you build your application locally for debugging and testing. The debug certificate includes your debug fingerprint (among other identifying information).
Open your device's Settings app. Tap security & privacy and then more security settings and then encryption & credentials. Tap install a certificate and then Wi-Fi certificate. Tap where you saved the certificate.
Open Device Settings > Security > Encryption & credentials > Install a certificate. Choose the CA certificate. Hit the Install anyway button on the warning that pops up. Verify your identity with your password, pattern, or fingerprint.
Therefore you can simply open Android Settings app and in the Security section select Encryption & credentials -> Install a certificate -> CA certificate . Then select the downloaded certificate. You can verify that the certificate has been installed in Encryption & credentials -> user credentials .
Open Android settings and then select Encryption & credentials. Select Install a certificate and then select CA certificate. Select the certificate file that you downloaded. After the installation process is complete, select Trusted credentials to ensure that the certificate was successfully installed.
