What are the Bollinger bands in Chartschool? ›

Bollinger Bands reflect direction with the 20-period SMA and volatility with the upper/lower bands. As such, they can determine if prices are relatively high or low. According to Bollinger, the bands should contain 88-89% of price action, which makes a move outside the bands significant.

The Balance of Power (BOP) indicator uses price to measure buying and selling pressure. It determines the strength of the buyers and sellers by looking at how strongly the price has changed, rather than using volume. Zero-line crossovers of the BOP indicator can be used as a signal for trend reversals.

Line Chart. A line chart is the most basic type of stock chart that tracks the closing price of a stock over time. Based on the period and interval chosen by you, the closing price is represented by a dot and all dots are joined together using a line.

Using the %b Indicator

Another indicator used with Bollinger Bands is %b, which plots the stock's closing price as a percentage of the upper and lower bands. The upper band is identified as 1.0, the middle band 0.5 and the lower band zero. Thus, %b shows how close the stock's current price is to the bands.

BOP indicators are not very accurate for the identification of a trend. It may provide a bullish or bearish signal but may reverse after entering into a trade. BOP cannot be used in isolation. It is useful only when paired with other indicators like Simple Moving Average (SMA).

The ADX identifies a strong trend when the ADX is over 25 and a weak trend when the ADX is below 20. Crossovers of the -DI and +DI lines can be used to generate trade signals. For example, if the +DI line crosses above the -DI line and the ADX is above 20, or ideally above 25, then that is a potential signal to buy.

Chaikin money flow is an oscillator that measures the money flowing into an asset during a specific lookback period, typically set at 21 days. It's usually displayed as a signal line, with values ranging from -1 to +1 (or -100 to +100, depending on the platform) with a zero line in the middle.
