Welcome Offer

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card welcome offer:Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠. You also get a statement credit for up to $50 each account anniversary for hotel stays booked through Chase Travel(SM).

The welcome offer could be worth more if you transfer your points to Chase’s travel partners. What happens if you don’t want to use your points for travel? If you redeem your points for a statement credit or cash, they’re worth about 1 cent each, so roughly $600.

Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Cardwelcome offer: Very straightforward: cash is cash.

The Chase welcome offer is worth more than twice as much as the Capital One bonus, even if you redeem the points for a statement credit. Chase wins this round.

Cash Back Rewards

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Cardoffers 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Travel(SM), 3x on dining, 3x points on online grocery purchases, 3x points on select streaming services, 2x points on other travel purchases, and 1x point on everything else. You also get the aforementioned $50 hotel credit each account anniversary for hotel stays booked through Chase Travel(SM).

Note that the grocery purchases must be made online and that this offer excludes Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs. However, you do get a complimentary Instacart+ subscription for six months. This card also offers 25% more value for your points when you use them to purchase travel through Chase Travel(SM).

The Chase card also earns bonus points on your anniversary equal to 10% of your total purchases made the previous year. That means if you spend $25,000 on purchases, you’ll get 2,500 bonus points.

Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Cardoffers an unlimited 4% cash back on dining, entertainment, and select streaming services, 3% cash back at grocery stores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Which card has better rewards depends on what you’re looking for. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Cardoffers better travel benefits, whereas the Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Cardoffers better rewards on dining and streaming services. Each card offers similar rewards on grocery purchases but the Chase card only offers elevated rewards if you shop online for groceries. If you usually shop at the store, Capital One is the better choice.

Who the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Cardis Best For

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card packs a lot of value into a card with a reasonable annual fee. It’s a terrific travel card for either the occasional traveler or for someone who is just getting into using credit cards for travel rewards. Chase makes it easy to transfer your points to travel partners: just log into your account and find “Transfer to Travel partners” in the drop-down menu. Chase’s travel partners include U.S.-based airlines Southwest, JetBlue, and United; hotel partners Hyatt, Marriott, and IHG. It’s an excellent introduction to the world of travel rewards.

The only person this card is not a good fit for is the person who never travels.

Who the Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Cardis Best For?

The Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card offers excellent rewards on dining, entertainment, and popular streaming services, plus 3% cash back on groceries. Most people spend a good bit on these things, especially groceries (gotta eat, right?). If you don’t want to pay an annual fee and don’t mind slightly lower rewards, or don’t think you’ll spend enough to justify it, consider Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. You’ll earn 3% cash back on streaming, dining, groceries, and entertainment, all for no annual fee.

Does it Make Sense to Get Both Cards?

Maybe, but there would be some overlap. If you’re interested in Capital One and already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you might be better off with the no-annual-fee SavorOne instead. Keep in mind that Chase has the 5/24 rule, which means if you’ve opened any five credit cards in the past two years, Chase will likely deny you another credit card.

You need excellent credit to be approved for the Chase card. On the other hand, Capital One can be super picky about how many accounts you’ve opened recently, although they don’t have a hard-and-fast 5/24 rule like Chase does. Apply for your first choice, because neither company likes too many inquiries in too short a time.
