December brings the holiday season upon us. Christmas means Santa Claus and Santa means gifts. December 4 is Santa’s List Day — the list that decides if you’ve been good, naughty or nice. Santa knows.
Before he set up shop in the North Pole, Santa worked out of Spain. According to the legends of Belgium and the Netherlands, St. Nicholas — generally referred to as Sinterklaas — comes from Spain by a steam boat to give gifts to children. This is the version according to which Santa keeps a list of children who’ve been naughty or nice.
Days of Christmas are added up, it equals 364 presents.
We have Coca-Cola to thank for making Santa’s red costume famous. The company first introduced Santa wearing the red suit in 1931 in one of their ad campaigns. Prior to 1931, Santa dressed in blue, green, brown and mauve. Coca-Cola’s massive ad campaign featured Santa in co*ke’s red and white colours, and it was so famous that it effectively locked Santa’s dress code.
Santa’s famous reindeer gang includes Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. They were first introduced in the 1823 poem A Visit from St Nicolas. This poem is now known as Twas the Night Before Christmas.
