Citi Double Cash® Card: Core features you need to know

The Citi Double Cash® Card is one of the best flat-rate cash back credit cards on the market, primarily because of its high rewards rate — many flat-rate cards top out at 1.5%. New cardholders can also transfer a balance from another credit card.

Cash back rewards rate

The card offers a flat 2% cash back on every purchase you make — that’s 1% back when you make the purchase and then another 1% back when you pay it off. There aren’t many credit cards that offer a higher flat rewards rate over the long term.

Through Dec. 31, 2024 you’ll also earn 5% total cash back on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked on the Citi Travel℠ portal.

You can redeem your cash back for a paper check, statement credit or a deposit into a linked Citi checking or savings account, or to a checking account you’ve used at least twice to pay a Citi credit card bill.

Introductory balance transfer offer

If you have a high-interest balance on another credit card, you can transfer that balance to the Citi Double Cash® Card and get an introductory 0% balance transfer APR for 18 months after opening the account. After that, the APR for balance transfers will jump to a variable 19.24% - 29.24%.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you want to take advantage of this benefit: You need to request the transfer within four months of opening your account to get the intro balance transfer APR offer. Take note of the balance transfer fee: Intro fee 3% of each transfer ($5 minimum) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum).

One last thing: There’s no 0% APR promotion on purchases. That’s one more reason not to make purchases on this card until after you pay off your balance transfer. To help avoid the risk of adding to your overall debt when you make a balance transfer, it’s best practice to wipe out your balance transfer debt before making any purchases on the card.

No annual fee

The card has an annual fee of $0, so you don’t have to worry about earning enough rewards to make up for one.

That said, the Citi Double Cash® Card’s interest rate can be steep. If you’re planning to carry a balance, know that the interest charges will eat into the value you get from the rewards, and potentially neutralize it altogether.

Other card details to know

The Citi Double Cash® Card is relatively simple, so you won’t get a lot of extra frills. But Citi Entertainment offers special access to presale tickets for various events.

New cardholders can also earn $200 cash back after spending $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. The bonus will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.

Who this card is good for

The Citi Double Cash® Card is a solid choice for people who want a great rewards rate but don’t want to bother with keeping track of bonus rewards categories.

But even if you do have a credit card with bonus rewards on certain spending categories, it may be handy to also have this card in your wallet for any purchases outside of the bonus categories that earn less than 2%.

The card’s long intro balance transfer APR promotion makes it an excellent option for someone looking to pay down high-interest credit card debt. And while it does charge a balance transfer fee, you can make up for that fee over time with rewards earned on new purchases after you’ve paid off the balance transfer.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

The Citi Double Cash® Card is an excellent card, but it may not be the right fit for every cardholder. If you’re on the fence, here are some other cards to compare.

  • Chase Freedom Unlimited®: This card could be a good match if you’re looking to make a big purchase soon but still want to earn cash back.
  • Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card: This card’s rewards give it long-term value in addition to its introductory APR offers.

Amazing Card

Credit Karma Member

I have had this card since 2015. I have a high 5-digit credit limit, and an 818-credit score. Although I have many cards, this is my go-to primary card. The rewards are fabulous, especially since I pay off balance every month. I get points for purchase and for payback. I use it for everything and rack up the points which never expire. NEVER EVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH THIS CARD. I LOVE IT.
