Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino is making a strong push for Australians to take action. "What this can mean is that people can find themselves paying multiple fees, which will obviously have a bad effect on people’s end balances," he explained. The solution? A simple visit to the ATO website via myGov. The "Super Health Check" tool is designed to help you quickly identify any lost or unclaimed super you might have.
ATO Deputy Commissioner Ben Kelly highlights that several factors can lead to lost super. Have you worked multiple jobs throughout your career? Changed your name at some point? "Around four million individuals hold two or more super accounts," Mr. Kelly stated. "It’s important to know how many super accounts you have and to consider if it is appropriate to consolidate your super to reduce fees and make it easier to manage." Think of it like this: multiple accounts mean multiple sets of fees, eating into your retirement savings. Consolidating can streamline your finances and boost your final super balance.
Mr. Kelly emphasizes that this unclaimed super isn't gone forever. "Checking for lost or unclaimed super is like reaching into your pocket and finding a $50 note – it’s your money, you just didn’t know it was there," he said. A seemingly simple change of address or a forgotten update to your contact details can be the reason why your super hasn't found its way back to you. Super is commonly classified as lost when an account becomes inactive, and the superannuation fund is unable to locate the member.
