New Super Mario Bros. 2 is focused on collecting Coins in a way that no previous Mario game has been. Collecting 1,000,000 (1 Million) coins results in a special bonus:
A new title screen!
Gaining 9,999,999 coins will get you
A Golden Raccoon Mario statue title screen!

Gold Coins
Gold Coins are everywhere and will earn Mario an extra life for every 100 collected.
The game also features large Gold Coins. These are worth 10, and in the Rainbow Courses some can be worth 100!
Red Coins
Red Coins appear after Mario passes through a red ring. If you collect all 8 before time runs out, Mario gets either a 1-Up (If he is already powered up), or a Power-Up.
Blue Coins
These coins appear after hitting a P switch.

You must collect them within the time limit or they will disappear. They usually point to a secret, Star Coin or something else important, like a secret exit.If you collect all of them, you get an applause.

Star Coins
There are three Star Coins hidden in every level, including boss levels. Collect as many as you can to unlock Mushroom Houses, Secret Levels and Star World levels.
Collect all of the star coins to unlock a star house in the star world that grants you a star when you visit it.
In the star world similar coins apear called moon coins (see moon coins below)

Moon Coins
Moon Coins are collected in the Star World. They replace Star Coins. They do not count towards your Star Coin total, but collecting them all will give you another star on your title screen (see 5 Stars on Your Save Data)
