Community Participation Guidelines - Open Knowledge Maps (2024)

Community participation guidelines

Open Knowledge Maps is driven by people from all over the world, who are passionate about better and more open solutions for discovery. Our goal is to create a respectful, sustainable and inclusive environment for everyone involved. As such, we have adopted these guidelines, which are aligned with our core values of openness, diversity, and common good.

We require all those who participate to agree and adhere to the Community Participation Guidelines in order to help us create a safe and positive experience for all. These guidelines outline our behavior expectations as members of the Open Knowledge Maps community, as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.

These guidelines apply in all Open Knowledge Maps activities, both offline and online, including but not limited to:

  • Working in Open Knowledge Maps spaces.
  • Working with other Open Knowledge Maps community participants virtually or co-located.
  • Representing Open Knowledge Maps at public events.
  • Representing Open Knowledge Maps in social media (official accounts, staff accounts, personal accounts, Facebook pages).
  • Participating in Open Knowledge Maps workshops and trainings.
  • Participating in Open Knowledge Maps-related chats, mailing lists, documents, development environments (e.g. Github), websites, group or person-to-person meetings.

The Community Participation Guidelines aim to support a community where all people should feel safe, regardless of sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, mental health, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, age, nationality, and political or religious affiliation.

Encouraged Behaviour

Examples of behavior that contributes to creating a positive environment include:

  • Using welcoming and inclusive language
  • Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
  • Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
  • Focusing on what is best for the community
  • Showing empathy towards other community members

Unacceptable Behaviour

Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:

  • The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or advances
  • Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
  • Public or private harassment
  • Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission
  • Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting

Our Responsibilities

Open Knowledge Maps team members are responsible for clarifying the standards of acceptable behavior and are expected to take appropriate and fair corrective action in response to any instances of unacceptable behavior.

Open Knowledge Maps team members have the right and responsibility to ban temporarily or permanently any participant for behaviors that they deem inappropriate, threatening, offensive, or harmful and to remove, edit, or reject posts, comments, commits, code, document edits, issues, and other contributions that are not aligned to the Community Participation Guidelines.

Enforcement

Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be reported by contacting the Open Knowledge Maps team at info@openknowledgemaps.org. Please include information on who was involved in the incident, what happened, and where and when it took place. All complaints will be reviewed and investigated and will result in a response that is deemed necessary and appropriate to the circ*mstances. The project team is obligated to maintain confidentiality with regard to the reporter of an incident.

Open Knowledge Maps team members who do not follow or enforce the Community Participation Guidelines in good faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other members of the organisation’s leadership.

If you feel you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating this Code of Conduct, you should notify the project team at info@openknowledgemaps.org with a concise description of your grievance.
