What happens when you enable community on Discord? ›

Community Server: Community Servers are invite-only spaces designed for people to share, connect, and learn from others all over the world who share common interests. Moderators in Community Servers have access to tools like Server Insights, Raid Protection, Rules and Onboarding.

Discord is ideally suited for running a true community because it gives community members flexibility to have the conversations they want. Within the server you can set up channels about specific topics, so fans feel control over what aspects of the community they follow.

Disable Unnecessary Functions: Turn off On-Screen Animations, Animated Emojis, and Sounds. Close Background Applications: Frees up CPU and RAM resources. Lower Video Settings: In Voice & Video settings, reduce video frame rate and resolution. Use Discord Lite: Consider switching to a lighter version if available.

With Discord's ease of use and popularity, along with the declined use of platforms like forums or IRC, many communities are looking to migrate to Discord. While most of it depends on your specific community, we aim to give some general advice, gotchas, and tips to make it as pain-free as possible.

Our Community Guidelines require that all adult content posted to Discord be kept behind an age-restricted gate. Server owners can designate specific channels as being 18+ by adding an age-restricted gate. Entire servers can now be classified as 18+ through the use of an age-restricted server designation.

If a user is reported as being under 13, we delete their account unless they can verify that they are at least 13 years old using an official ID document.

Common Sense Media also recommends that Discord users be at least 13 due to its open chat. Because it's all user-generated, there's the potential for plenty of inappropriate content, like swearing and graphic language and images (though it's entirely possible to belong to a group that forbids these).

Joining a Discord server that is poorly moderated could be dangerous in the long term, however. You might end up clicking on a URL that takes you to a malware-delivery page or exposing private information in a phishing attack. As a rule, it is best not to join a Discord server unless you know who is running it.

A community server gives you extra functionality (like being able to make those forum channels or getting data insights once you hit 500 members). And – when you're big enough (10,000 members) – you can even get listed in the public discovery section in Discord.

Live broadcasts and screen sharing are the most data-hungry features on Discord. Depending on the quality of the broadcast or shared screen, you might use up to 2.5GB per hour.

Discord succeeds because it's platform agnostic. You can integrate it with your PlayStation or Xbox account, for example. Not being tethered to a game console also strengthens Discord's argument for non-gaming uses such as talking to family or classmates.
