Compound Interest Formulas (2024)

There aretwo formulas that are used for compound interest:

Discrete Compound Interest Formula

This is used forinterest that is not compounded continuously.
The varibles are definedbelow:
A = theamount after time t
P
= the initial amount or principal
r = the interest rate in decimal form
n = the number of compounding periods in 1 year
t = time in years.

If the interest is compounded yearly, n is 1. If theinterest is compounded semi-annually, n is 2. If theinterest is compounded quarterly, n is 4. If the interestis compounded monthly, n is 12.

Continuous CompoundInterest Formula

This is used forinterest which is compounded continuously.
The varibles are definedbelow:
A = the amount after time t
P
= the initial amount or principal
r = the interest rate in decimal form
t = time in years.

The formula for calculating compound interest is P = C (1 + r/n)nt – where 'C' is the initial deposit, 'r' is the interest rate, 'n' is how frequently interest is paid, 't' is how many years the money is invested and 'P' is the final value of your savings.

Are there 2 formulas for compound interest? ›

To calculate monthly compound interest, use the formula A = P(1 r/n)^(nt), where A is the final amount, P is the principal, r is the annual interest rate, n is the number of times interest is compounded per year, and t is the number of years.

What is the magic number for compound interest? ›

For continuous compounding interest, you'll get more accurate results by using 69.3 instead of 72. The Rule of 72 is an estimate, and 69.3 is harder for mental math than 72, which divides easily by 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 12.
