Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi: Core features to consider

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi offers a lucrative mix of rewards rates on everyday expenses. The credit card also has some decent travel benefits. That said, the card is restrictive with rewards redemption. And while there’s a $0 annual fee, it isn’t free either.

Cash back rates

From the beginning, cardholders will find it easy to rack up cash back with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Here’s what you’ll get.

• 4% cash back on the first $7,000 spent each year on eligible gas and electric vehicle charging purchases worldwide (1% back after that)
• 3% cash back on restaurant and eligible travel purchases worldwide
• 2% cash back on all purchases at Costco and Costco.com
• 1% cash back on all other purchases

That said, the card doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus for new cardholders — something a lot of other cash back cards have.

Membership requirement

The card doesn’t charge an annual fee, but you could say there’s an “unofficial” one because it requires that you have a Costco membership.

An annual membership for Costco costs $60 or $120, depending on which tier you want. If you’re going to shop at Costco and pay that fee regardless, it may not bother you. But if you’re paying the annual membership fee just to carry the card, it may not be worth it.

Rewards redemption

Unlike other top cash back credit cards that may allow you to redeem your hard-earned rewards once you hit a set amount — or even whenever you want — this card only pays out your cash back once a year.

And instead of getting a statement credit or a direct deposit to your checking account, you’ll receive a rewards certificate, which you can redeem for cash or merchandise at Costco warehouses in the U.S.

These extra hoops may make some cash back enthusiasts run the other direction. But if you don’t mind waiting and letting your rewards pile up — and don’t mind the limited redemption options — it may not matter.

No foreign transaction fees

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees, which is uncommon among many top cash back credit cards.

So whether you’re traveling domestically or abroad, this card is a worthy travel companion.

Other card details to know

Beyond the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi’s standout features, there are a few other things to know before you apply.

• The card can act as your Costco membership ID to get you in a warehouse’s front door.
• If you close the card or your Costco membership, you’ll forfeit any cash back you earned for the year.
• You’ll also get purchase protection.
• The card has a variable 20.49% APR on purchases and balance transfers.

Who this card is good for

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is an excellent choice for loyalists of the wholesale club. And because the credit card is a Visa, you won’t have to worry about having the right card when you shop there.

It’s especially valuable for cardholders who spend a lot on gas, restaurants and travel, and who don’t want to worry about needing to make up for an annual fee.
