How do I speak to someone on Credit Karma? ›

Common reasons for filing a credit dispute

Reasons why someone would dispute items on their credit report include: Inaccurate information: This could include wrong balances, incorrect payment history, account status, or credit limit. It could also be due to a creditor accidentally entering the wrong information.

2) What is the 609 loophole? The “609 loophole” is a misconception. Section 609 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows consumers to request their credit file information. It does not guarantee the removal of negative items but requires credit bureaus to verify the accuracy of disputed information.

You can't remove the hard inquiry from your credit report if you authorized the credit check. However, you have the right to dispute unauthorized inquiries, just as you can dispute any other error on your credit report. If you don't have time to file disputes, consider getting help from a credit repair company.

In September 2022, the FTC announced an enforcement action against Credit Karma, alleging that the company used claims that consumers were “pre-approved” for a credit card or had “90% odds” of approval to entice them to apply for offers that, in many instances, they did not qualify for.

What happened with Credit Karma? ›

In January 2023, Credit Karma paid money to settle charges brought by the FTC. The FTC alleged that many people who got “pre-approved” credit offers from Credit Karma were not approved. As a result, they wasted time applying and sometimes saw their credit scores drop when their applications were denied.

Credit Karma is considered an accurate source of credit information because it gets its information from two of the three major credit bureaus: TransUnion and Equifax.

As someone with a 650 credit score, you are firmly in the “fair” territory of credit. You can usually qualify for financial products like a mortgage or car loan, but you will likely pay higher interest rates than someone with a better credit score. The "good" credit range starts at 690.

Most credit scores range from 300 - 850, and the scores you see on Credit Karma are as follows: 300-639 - Needs Work. 640-699 - Fair. 700-749 - Good.

If you need a credit report or have an issue with your report, you'll need to contact a credit bureau. Each of the three national credit bureaus has a website where you can do most things. They prefer that you use online forms instead of calling.
